Top Lines of the Night
Florida Panthers @ New Jersey Devils
Vincent Trocheck ($5,800) – Jonathan Marchessault ($5,000) – Jaromir Jagr ($5,000)
The Panthers’ top line has been very productive as of late, despite being thrown together due to injuries. Marchessault has continued to produce even though he has slowed from his hot start. He has two goals, five points and 14 shots on goal (SOG) in his last six games. Trocheck has also been hot with six points and 22 SOG in his last six games, including two power play points (PPP). Jagr, the ageless wonder, has nine points in his last nine games and is tied for second on the time in scoring with Marchessault at 25 points. Despite this line being shut out by the Bruins on Saturday, I like the matchup tonight against New Jersey as the three forwards have combined for three goals, two assists and 17 SOG in two games vs the Devils this season.
Winnipeg Jets vs Calgary Flames
Mark Scheifele ($6,600) – Nikolaj Ehlers ($5,700) – Drew Stafford ($3,900)
With the unfortunate injury to Patrik Laine, Stafford will slot onto this line for the foreseeable future. Scheifele continues to develop into a top-tier center and has 37 points in 39 games this season. He is riding a four-game point streak and has at least one point in seven of his last nine games. Ehlers has his own four-game point streak, and he has at least one goal in each of those games, and like Scheifele has points in seven of his last nine games, with goals in six of them. Stafford notched a power play goal (PPG) against the Sabres over the weekend, snapping a three-game point drought. He’ll be a solid value play tonight with two top scoring players.
Superstar to Build Around
Jeff Carter ($7,200) – Carter has been on a tear as of late with eight goals and 12 points in his last 10 games. He has 28 SOG and four PPP over that span as well. He’s coming off a three-point game on Saturday night against the Wild, his fourth multi-point game in his last 10 games, and faces a porous Stars’ defense that is ranked 28th in the league. Carter has 15 points in 18 home games this season and has four points in two games vs Dallas on the year.
Value on Offense
Matthew Tkachuk ($4,800) – Tkachuk has quietly moved up the rookie scoring list with an impressive run for the Flames. The sixth overall pick from this year has a nine-game point streak going that has produced one goal and nine assists. He has a solid matchup tonight vs Winnipeg, a that that he had a three-point game against earlier in the year.
Jiri Huddler ($3,900) – Huddler has taken a while to get going after missing a large chunk of the year with an illness. He only has two points, all in his last 10 games, but he skated on the Stars’ top line on Saturday with Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza and had four SOG. He’ll have decent value as long as he sticks there.
Braden Holtby ($7,500) – Holtby is on fire right now, posting back-to-back shutouts and having the distinction of being the goalie that stopped the Blue Jackets win streak. He has stopped the last 59 shots he has faced against Columbus and Ottawa and has won three of his last four games overall.
Roberto Luongo ($7,700) – After missing Saturday night with an injury he suffered in warmups, Luongo should be good to go tonight against the Devils. He has had a rough go of it as of late, but Bobby Lou has a great matchup against the Devils’ 27th-ranked offense, who he beat earlier this season, allowing only one goal against.
Value on Defense
Jake Muzzin ($4,100) – Muzzin is having a very down year compared to his last few seasons, but he is starting to put up some numbers. He has 11 points on the year, but four of them have come in his last four games, including two PPP, nine SOG and three blocks.
Nathan Beaulieu ($3,500) – Beaulieu has come on strong in his last five games, posting six points in that span. He has one goal, five assists, seven blocks and 15 SOG in those games and is riding a three-game point streak at the moment.
Power Play Defensemen
John Klingberg ($4,800) – Klingberg is another defenseman having a down, but he is turning it around. He has points in six of his last eight games and is riding a two-game point streak at the moment, with a goal and an assist in each of those games. Two of his four points in those outings have come on the power play.
John Carlson ($6,000) – Carlson was kept off the scoresheet against the Senators on Saturday night but he had back-to-back multi-point games before that and has eight points in his last eight games overall. He is third on the Capitals, and leads their defensemen, with eight PPP on the year. I think he is a good play tonight despite the tough matchup vs Carey Price.
