On May 1, Colorado residents finally got their first chance to get in on some legal sports betting action in their home state on DraftKings Sportsbook. Following the official sports betting launch, bettors quickly took to the newly accessible DraftKings Sportsbook futures lines with a focus on the local Colorado teams. Here are some of the highlights and notable strategies being implemented in Colorado through the earliest stages of sports betting.

Sports bettors can get in on the betting action by downloading the DK Sportsbook app or heading over to the DraftKings Sportsbook website.

Lots of Hometown Love for the Denver Broncos

Colorado bettors have focused on their hometown teams in all of the major sports, but the Denver Broncos have been far and away the most popular team to bet on. Through the first few days of legal sports betting, the Broncos rank:
  • 1st in total bets
  • 1st in total handle
  • 1st in bets to win the Super Bowl
  • 1st in handle to win the Super Bowl
It’s not just the Broncos as a team either, as the bets have come flying in on some notable Broncos players, too. 2020 1st round pick Jerry Jeudy is the most popular pick for Offensive Rookie of the Year (+1600), both by bets and handle. Quarterback Drew Lock is also the most bet on player for NFL MVP (+7000) and he’s 2nd behind only Lamar Jackson in terms of handle. Broncos LB Von Miller also ranks 8th so far by bets and handle, and he’s the only defensive player in the top 10 for either metric.

Avalanche Favoritism Extends to the Western Conference

Just like the Broncos, the Colorado Avalanche have drawn heavy betting interest from the local fans, though arguably for much better reasons. The NHL season is still suspended, but the Avalanche remain one of this season’s Stanley Cup favorites as they currently sit at 2nd place in the Western Conference and tied for 3rd in the NHL standings. Unsurprisingly, the Avs are 1st in both total bets and handle, but the division rival St. Louis Blues are receiving a lot of betting attention too, ranking 2nd in bets and 4th in handle. The Blues are the reigning Stanley Cup Champions and are the only team in the Western Conference ahead of Colorado in the standings.

One of the more surprising findings from the early Colorado betting numbers is the handle coming in on the Philadelphia Flyers, the 2nd most of any NHL team. The Flyers are just +1300 to win the Stanley Cup, but they were one of the hottest teams in the NHL before play stopped, with a nine-game winning streak from February 18 to March 7. The Flyers went from the playoff bubble to a true Eastern Conference contender and are just one point back of the Washington Capitals for 1st place in the Metropolitan Division. Perhaps this run has reminded Colorado fans of the Blues surge last season that ultimately resulted in a Stanley Cup victory.

Substantial Betting on the Nuggets and Rockies

Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rockies bets are lagging behind the Broncos and Avalanche, but both teams rank near the top in championship betting for their respective sports. The Nuggets are 1st in bets and 2nd in handle for the NBA Championship, behind only the Lakers, and the Rockies are 1st in handle and 2nd in bets for the World Series, behind only the Yankees.
