After six games this afternoon, Major League Baseball finishes up the month of May with a solid nine-game main MLB slate for fantasy baseball tonight. As you assemble your lineup for tonight, you may need to balance out some big salaries with some affordable options. Here are my top two bargain pitchers (under $8K) and top three bargain hitters (under $3.5K) for this Wednesday.
Jaime García – ATL @ LAA – $7,600
Since he is pitching for Atlanta, García has flown under the radar this season, but he has been pretty solid most of the year. In his nine starts, he is 2-3 with a 3.58 ERA, but he has five quality starts in his last seven, and he has been especially effective over his last two outings. He posted over 25 DKFP in both outings shutting down the Nationals and the Giants while allowing just one earned run in 14.2 innings.
The Angels lineup he faces tonight will be without Mike Trout, and they have struggled to score against lefties this season. In fact, only the Padres and Braves have scored fewer runs off southpaws. García and his owners will hope that trend and García’s current form continue tonight.
Antonio Senzatela – COL @ SEA – $7,800
It’s been a remarkable first 10 MLB starts for Rockies’ rookie Antonio Senzatela, who comes into tonight 7-1 with a 3.19 ERA. Senzatela has pitched effectively at Coors Field, but he is undefeated on the road going 2-0 with a 3.52 ERA in his four road starts.
Tonight, he’ll take the mound at Safeco against the Mariners after Seattle swept the two games of this interleague series in Denver. Senzatela isn’t going to pile up strikeouts in most of his starts, but he can give you solid innings and a good shot at a win in a pitcher-friendly park tonight.
Tyler Flowers – C – ATL @ LAA – $3,200
Jaime García’s battery mate is also worth a look as a bargain play tonight since Flowers has been crushing the ball lately and makes a great affordable option behind the plate. Flowers has hit safely in four straight and nine of his last 10 games while going 13-37 (.351) with a .983 OPS.
He connected on his third homer of the season last night in L.A., and tonight he’ll face Jesse Chávez, who he has homered off in the past. The Braves are playing with the DH in this series, so there should definitely be a way for them to get Flowers’ hot bat back in their lineup tonight.
Chase Utley – 1B/2B – LAD @ STL – $3,400
Utley has turned back the clock this month and has been a huge part of the Dodgers’ current six-game winning streak. In May, he is 22-66 (.333) after going just 5-41 (.122) in April. He has added three doubles, three triples, three homers, three stolen bases and 14 RBI this month and comes in with a 1.029 OPS for the month and a 1.592 OPS over the last week.
In the Dodgers’ current series with St. Louis, Utley has gone 5-8 with a double, triple, homer, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Tonight, he’ll look to continue that success at Busch Stadium as he faces Carlos Martínez.
Keon Broxton – OF – MIL @ NYM – $3,200
Broxton has taken over as the Brewers leadoff man over the last week due to the continued struggles of Jonathan Villar. Broxton hasn’t fared much better in the Brewers’ current series against the Mets, but at this price, I think he’s worth a look tonight even in a tough matchup.
Broxton is hitting .290 in May (27-93) with five doubles, two triple, four homers, 12 RBI and 17 runs scored. He has an .863 OPS on the month, but he has gone 0-8 with a walk, a run scored and RBI so far in New York. Tonight, he’ll face Jacob deGrom, which is one of the reasons he is so affordable. However, Broxton did homer off of deGrom earlier this year. Despite the tough matchup, Broxton is a nice value to check out in the outfield hitting atop a lineup packed with power.
