With eight games today, seven of which are included in the DraftKings slate of games, there are plenty of different options to choose from when setting a lineup. With the Gold Cup done and over with, we welcome plenty of stars back into the starting lineups for most MLS teams. Follow me on Twitter (@jwl_15) for injury and lineup updates throughout the day and here are some of the players I will be targeting tonight:
Donovan Ricketts – $3,000 – LA Galaxy – The theme of my goalkeeping targets is “cheap”. Ricketts was acquired midweek by the Galaxy after they terminated the contract of Jaime Penedo. If he is able to take the starting job from Brian Rowe, he will be a great start against a Colorado Rapids team that has struggled to score goals at times this season.
Brad Knighton – $3,000 – New England Revolution – Knighton is another cheap option for you to use in a lineup when looking to stack up on high priced attackers. He gave up two goals last weekend, but scored double digit points in a win two weeks ago. If Sebastian Giovinco is unable to play with his heel injury, then Knighton could be the steal of the weekend.
Others to Consider – Tim Melia (Sporting KC; $5,300), Andrew Dykstra (DC United; $5,200), Luis Robles (New York Red Bulls; $4,800)
Corey Ashe – $4,100 – Orlando City SC – Since being traded to Orlando City, Ashe has yet to score double digit points. Fortunately, he has been playing all 90 minutes and has a great chance to put up big numbers this weekend against a Columbus Crew team struggling in defense. If he can use his pace to get by defenders, he should be able to get plenty of crosses into the box to provide chances for the likes of Cyle Larin and Kaka.
Waylon Francis – $4,500 – Columbus Crew – Francis has six assists on the season, leading all defenders, and will have a great opportunity to pick another one up this weekend against Orlando City. They gave up five goals last weekend to New York City FC and both Angelino and Iraola had assists from a fullback position. I expect Francis to have the same chance this weekend, the only question being if Kei Kamara can get his head on the end of one of his crosses.
DeMarcus Beasley – $5,200 – Houston Dynamo – Beasley returns from his Gold Cup appearance with a new face in attack. Erick Torres will join Will Bruin and Giles Barnes in attack, providing Bealsey with plenty of options when looking to play in a cross. He posted double digit points in his last appearance and I would expect the same against Sporting KC.
Others to Consider – Taylor Kemp (D.C. United; $4,600), Sheanon Williams (Houston Dynamo; $4,000), Tyrone Mears (Seattle Sounders; $5,600)
Javier Morales – $8,900 – Real Salt Lake – Morales has posted 20 plus points in two straight games and double digits in his last three appearances. DC United is a solid team, but gave up two goals last week to Philadelphia. I expect Morales to have another great game, with Joao Plata and Sebastian Jaime thriving in front of him.
Lee Nguyen – $8,300 – New England Revolution – Nguyen has a great match up this weekend with the news that midfielder counterpart, Michael Bradley, will be out for Toronto with an injury. Nguyen has scored double digits in three straight games, scoring goals in the last two matches. I would expect the same tonight, especially against a team that is coming off a three goal draw.
Sebastian Lletget – $5,900 – LA Galaxy – Lletget has been very solid since joining the Galaxy and the arrival of Steven Gerrard and company should only help. He had a poor game last week, as did the entire team, but Lletget should be able to replicate the previous two weeks against Colorado tonight. He scored goals in back to back games and with the poor defense of Colorado, he should have a chance to add another.
Others to Consider – Marco Delgado (Toronto FC; $5,100), Diego Fagundez (New England Revolution; $5,200), Lloyd Sam (New York Red Bulls; $7,600)
Kei Kamara – $10,900 – Columbus Crew – Kamara has been brilliant so far this season, and was once again last week against Toronto FC. He scored for the third straight game and will look to make it four in a row against an Orlando City team that gave up five goals last weekend. I expect Kamara to have plenty of chances with Ethan Finlay continuing to provide him great service.
Clint Dempsey – $10,000 – Seattle Sounders – Dempsey returns from the Gold Cup having earned the Golden Boot for the tournament. With Obafemi Martins still out with injuries, Dempsey will have to put this team on his shoulders to dig them out of their poor form. I expect his world class ability to be on display against Vancouver as he knows his team is desperate for goals and a win.
Cyle Larin – $8,200 – Orlando City SC – Cyle Larin returned from the Gold Cup last weekend with a bang. He posted a hat trick against New York City FC and scored an astonishing 38 points last Sunday. He now goes up against a Columbus Crew team that blew a three goal lead last weekend, which leads me to believe that Larin will have plenty of chances to add more goals to his rookie campaign.
Others to Consider – Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy; $10,600), Fabian Espindola (DC United; $9,000), Giles Barnes (Houston Dynamo, $8,100)
Sebastian Jaime – $5,900 – Real Salt Lake – Jaime has been overshadowed recently by the play of Javier Morales and Joao Plata, but his numbers are very good. He has scored double digit points in five of his last six starts and continues to be a threat on goal. I expect him to get his chances this weekend against an inexperienced back four of Sporting KC and a goal is a good possibility.
Shaun Wright-Phillips – $5,000 – New York Red Bulls – The brother of Bradley Wright-Phillips officially signed with the Red Bulls midweek after training with the team for several weeks now. He should be ready to be inserted right into the starting lineup and if so, may be able to spark Bradley back into his goal scoring form from earlier in the season.
