I’m going to spend a little time on a team that you are not likely familiar with. I’m going to spend some time across the pond on a team surprising the English Premier League. I speak of the Leicester City Football Club .

Known as the Foxes, this scrappy football club has climbed out of the basement of the EPL and is very, very close to staving off relegation and staying in the EPL for next season. Generally, teams that are welcomed into the EPL are the first to be shown the door in the next season, but Leicester City is surprising everyone with not only winning four out of their last five but also a substantial defensive effort against yet-to-be-crowned-champion Chelsea. Yes, this little upstart went toe-to-toe with the presumptive EPL champions just a few weeks ago. You should check out their fixtures for this season and take a few notes.

Soccer involves a lot of pattern hunting. So, what do you see?

They have also just dominated Southampton; the 7th ranked club in the EPL. In this match, a young man by the name of Riyad Mahrez scored two goals. In football terms, they call this a brace. I call it brilliant. Mahrez is a young international footballer born in France but also holding Algerian and Moroccan citizenship. And I doubt you had every heard of him prior to his most recent performance. Truthful, I hadn’t either. However, prior to this weeks EPL matchups, after checking the boxes on the names I recognized, I dug into the deeper picks. Mahrez filtered to the top. SO I took note of him. I also keep an eye on the lineups as they were posted. I saw he was getting the starting spot against a defense that wasn’t the most stout and took a chance with him. He scored 29.25 points on

I’m not here to puff out my chest or put a feather in my cap. I’m here to hold up a mirror.

Granted Riyad’s performance is rarely duplicated on a week to week basis. But take this to heart, next week Leicester City plays Sunderland and then the lowly Queens Park Rangers for the next match. Sunderland is trying to avoid relegation a loss to Leicester would be traumatic, but the QPR match is incredibly provocative for goal scoring buffet.

Take note, Manchester City just demolished QPR 6-0. QPR is going back to the English Championship League next season. That means less money for the club and owners. It also means the players on QPR won’t likely play for QPR next season. So, they’ve got little to fight for. Give that some thought when you see a club or a player on a hot streak on the schedule ahead.

Till next time, never count out an underdog and follow me @Deepdfspicks.
