Sorry, Yankees fans, but Mariano Rivera Jr. was selected 134th overall (fourth round) by the Washington Nationals in this year’s MLB Draft.
Mariano Rivera Jr. is no novelty. Really clean delivery. Fastball sat 93-95 and hit 97 late in year. Good breaking balls. Went to Nationals.— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) June 9, 2015
This past season at Iona University, Mo Jr. recorded a 2.65 ERA in 14 total starts, threw three shutouts, and had a 113:27 strikeout-to-walk ratio. You gotta think someone named “Mariano Rivera” would get drafted because of his last name/bloodline/birth right to baseball’s iron throne regardless, but, Mo Jr.’s statistics are nothing to scoff at and he’s clearly earned his way to the big stage on his own.
If you’d like to learn a little bit more about Mariano Rivera’s kid, like why he refuses to throw a cutter despite having the greatest teacher ever at his disposal, it’s worth a couple minutes of your time to check out SB Nation’s feature story on him from last year
