The NHL Game Breakdown rolls on here at DraftKings. We take an in-depth look at all of the games on the schedule each day in terms of expected pace of play, Vegas lines, and defense vs. position match ups. There are only three games on this Monday so this will be fast.
NHL $8,500 Sniper
We have a nice cheap way to make some quick money in a GPP right after the Super Bowl hangover.
The news is coming in but keep an eye in Calgary with Jiri Hudler who was out on Saturday with an illness. He will probably be a game time decision. There will be more injury updates on Twitter. Time is aplenty here on Monday and that is a good thing.
Panthers @ Rangers
Both teams played last on Saturday and honestly Florida looked a lot better than Ne w Jersey and just did not get much of anything in the way of breaks. If you hold a team to 14 shots on goal, you should generally win. The problem is Florida is not finding ways to win the games they need to. Therefore they are falling further and further out of the playoffs. Aleksander Barkov has been incredibly good of late as it seems the talent is finally bubbling up after a season long’s worth of futility. Roberto Luongo has not been nearly as good as he was in the first few months of the season either. As for the Rangers, they had a nice solid 4-1 win over Carolina on Saturday and even survived a scare with Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist will get the start and he will have to be on his game. Florida is active and will get their scoring changes. Derek Stepan and Rick Nash could definitely have a very good night but do not forget about guys like Marty St. Louis and even Mats Zuccarello. This will be a game where New York has to keep the foot on the gas pedal. If they do not, Florida’s younger players will be able to control possession and maybe the scoreboard if that is the case.
Money Line: Rangers -210 , O/U 5.
Players to Watch
- Aleksander Barkov, C, Coyotes ($4500)
- Roberto Luongo, G, Coyotes ($7,700)
- Derek Stepan, LW, Rangers ($5600)
- Henrik Lundqvist, G, Rangers ($9000)
Jets @ Flames
These two teams are going to definitely make for an interesting study in contrasts. Who will Paul Maurice start in Calgary? Will the Winnipeg Jets be able to get it going on the road? That is the question. Now Calgary sometimes takes their time in getting going also. They love scoring goals in the third period and make some amazing comebacks. Jonas Hiller has been pretty good in net but Winnipeg again has that dilemma of who to start. The Ladd-Little-Wheeler combo has been impressive but watch for Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien. The Jets have lots of threats but sometimes they just kind of stall and get sluggish. Calgary does not always possess the puck well and that creates more work for them. Mikael Backlund has been their go to guy while Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie (their two best defenseman) have struggled offensively and defensively. It is not just Jiri Hudler and Johnny Gaudreau anymore as more players just keep stepping up for Calgary. This will be a fun game to watch.
Line: Flames -125. O/U 5 (Bookies not sure on this one).
Players to Watch
- Evander Kane, LW, Jets ($6700)
- Dustin Byfuglien, D, Jets ($7200)
- Johnny Gaudreau, LW, Flames ($5500)
- Jonas Hiller, G, Flames ($6900)
This is the late game and that literally everything screams a San Jose win. That is very likely to happen but with the bevy of weapons San Jose has in its top six, it is a game that should be a cakewalk. The problem is the Sharks often play down to their competition but they can easily top three goals a night at home. They should be able to do that and maybe exceed the 3.5 goal team total. Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture alone should wreak considerable havoc at even strength then especially on the man advantage. Antti Niemi comes off a 31 save shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks by the way. For Edmonton, at least Taylor Hall should be back and that line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle could cause fits for San Jose. Anton Lander has been a rather nice find too. Justin Schultz has all the talent but just cannot put it quite together. That seems to be the theme with Edmonton. They have all this talent and yet they are right near the bottom. The Oilers will have a tough time here and only San Jose can beat themselves.
Line: Sharks -165 . O/U 5.5.
Players to Watch
- Taylor Hall, LW, Oilers ($5300)
- Anton Lander, C, Oilers ($3000)
- Patrick Marleau, LW, Sharks ($8000)
- Brent Burns, D, Sharks ($6100)
