The week begins again and I am ready for more daily picks here on “The Playbook”. There are three games to choose from on this day. Let’s go!
This is a slate that has a features some ugly and some good. Let’s discuss!
Antti Raanta ($9,100) – It is a tough choice tonight but Raanta will have an angry Blackhawks team playing a struggling Calgary Flames squad. Though Calgary could give Chicago some fits, here is a game where the goalie should see a good bit of rubber and have chances to put up a pretty high save total (back end of back to back). Calgary is a team who likes to give up chances and that plays into Chicago’s hands and yet they generate shots somehow. There is always something weird when these two teams play. We will roll with it anyway.
Others to consider: James Reimer ($7,000). — we thought about Jonathan Quick but that road record is just hideous.
Tyler Bozak ($5,000) – It is a lower value kind of night on Sunday. Just keep playing him as he is going to not regress too much. When you play with Phil Kessel, you can ride the wave. All kidding aside, Tyler Bozak does have a weird knack of creating offense and for DFS owners that is always a good thing with a short slate. You may want Phil Kessel on your wing in DFS on this night.
Anze Kopitar ($4,900) – With 13 points in 26 games, Kopitar has been a bust this season despite injuries around him. He should be better and knows he has to be better. Maybe Toronto wakes him up or something. At some point, the lights have to go on and he has to put up some points, right? This is more of a reach but again you have to have some guts in this business. Let’s see how this works.
*Others I like: Jonathan Toews ($6,800), Derek Stepan ($5,100), Mike Santorelli ($4,800).
Value: Peter Holland ($3,000), J.T. Miller ($2,500).
Phil Kessel ($8,500) – The minutes are gradually heading up but Kessel is still not quite 100%. However, he does not need to be. On the surface, a game against Los Angeles does not sound like a good idea to play him but why not at this point. Phil Kessel really enjoys weekend games for whatever reason and the first line looked very good against Detroit again. He is a must play even when he cannot quite give it his all.
Patrick Kane ($8,000) – His ability to score goals is always helpful when you consider each goal is 3.5 points (three for the goal and 0.5 for the shot). Kane has one of the nastiest backhand shots I have ever seen and he scored one against the New York Islanders last night. The winger has regained his play no matter what status and that means spend a little, stomach it, and get him into your lineup ASAP. The winning streak ended but expect Kane to come out even more hungry against Calgary.
Others I like: Taylor Hall ($7,200), Patrick Sharp ($5,800), Martin St. Louis ($5,600).
Value: Daniel Winnik ($2,500), Tyler Pitlick ($2,500).
Drew Doughty ($6,300) – This is the first time all season that Doughty had back to back multiple point games and Los Angeles needs more of that “take it into my hands more” attitude. If he keeps shooting, pucks will find their way into the net. The other parts of his game are just fine. Doughty is a 50 point a year player even despite his responsibilities. Toronto might help along in that quest so get him in your lineup as he is becoming a must start.
Cody Franson ($4,100) – Hey his drop in value makes him worth a pick-up. Franson picks up too many points to pass up really. He averages 1.5 to 2 daily points just from blocked shots and shots on goal. So if he gets an assist, that is about a four point night or close. His power play time is also vital to his production and Los Angeles has been undisciplined of late. Again, you pick up Franson because his number is so low and that potential is better than that price tag.
Others I like: Mark Giordano ($7,500), T.J. Brodie ($4,300), Ryan McDonagh ($4,200), .
Value: Mark Fayne ($2,600), Korbinian Holzer ($2,500).
Thanks for reading guys and hopefully the picks help you out. If you have any questions, fire them away at me on twitter @ChrisWasselTHW and i’ll do my best to answer them. We will also have a few adds and subtractions as well.
Good luck today!
