The NHL Cheat sheet is your nightly look at some key matchups, fantasy studs, value plays, and important fantasy news and notes for the upcoming slate…

Note: With only one game on the slate tonight the cheat sheet will also be discussing some info for Oct 20th games as well.

Highest Vegas Totals and Biggest Favorite

Biggest Favorite: Rangers -120

Largest Totals: Rangers v Sharks—5… the only game tonight doesn’t have a huge o/u so if looking to target games with higher total use players from Tues games.

Stud Goalies (to avoid playing skaters against)

Martin Jones ($7000): Jones has been superb to start the year and has been arguably the best goalie in the league over the first 5 or so games. He’s let in 2 goals in 4 starts and is undefeated as a Shark this year. Avoid using too many skaters against him tonight.

Marc Andre-Fleury ($7800): Fleury plays Tuesday but has been really sharp the past couple outings. He’s 2-0 in his last two games and only allowed one goal over that span. Avoid playing too many skaters against him as Fleury can shut down the best of them when he’s hot.

Dud Goalies (to possibly target skaters against)

Antti Raanta ($7400): Raanta isn’t so much a dud goalie as he is inexperienced. He played extremely well with Chicago last season but will be making his first start with the Rangers this year on Monday. He could be “rusty” so to speak and might be a good target for your skaters.

Jonas Hiller or Karri Ramo ($6800): The Flames have started the season poorly and a large part of the reason for the slow start is the poor play of their goalies. Whoever starts in net for the Flames Tuesday is a good goalie to target skaters against.

Hottest Lines

Tyler Seguin ($8300) – Jamie Benn ($7600) – Patrick Sharp ($5700)

This line is absolutely hot fire right now. After a couple slow games to start the season Tyler Seguin has been on a rampage and is firing the puck at will every time he’s on the ice, great for his shot totals in fantasy. Meanwhile, the Stars have given up the balanced approach and allowed Patrick Sharp to ride third wheel with their two young superstars. This seems to have paid off as Sharp looks to be the perfect complement and a great veteran presence. I love this line for fantasy because all of these players rack up shot totals and get a ton of ice as Dallas loves to roll their top line out as much as possible (no balanced approach here). This line plays Tuesday so you’ll have to wait a day before icing them.

Top Upside and Top Value at Defense

Brent Burns ($5800): Burns is the top point man on the Sharks and a vital part of their offensive attack every night. With Logan Couture out and the Sharks facing a backup goalie I think its fine to pay up for Burns who should be getting even more looks on the power play. Burns is one of the few defenseman you can actually count on for consistent goal production and paying up for him as the fourth highest D-Man on this slate is actually an OK bargain.

Ryan Murray ($3000): Until Murray’s price point comes up I’ll be recommending him as my cheap play every night. Murray may not be producing point wise yet but he’s seeing the bulk of the work on D on the PP for the Blue Jackets and is a pretty talented young D Man. At only $3000 he’s huge value and also been getting a lot of blocked shots recently which is a great bonus. He’ll be a great play once the points start rolling in.

Best Superstar to Build Lineups Around

Joe Pavelski ($6800): While I also love the aforementioned Tyler Seguin, Pavelski has been great to start the season too and currently has 5 points through 5 games. With Logan Couture out expect Pavelski to keep carrying more of the offensive load and to see a bit more ice time every game. Pavelski’s a great all-around player and can contribute as a goal scorer and play maker giving him nice fantasy upside and a pretty decent floor most nights as well. Ride the talented Shark as he’s consistently priced lower than other superstar forwards.

Best Value Plays to Fill out your lineup with

Chris Tierney ($2600): Tierney is a nice young player who’s currently centring the Sharks third line. The great thing about Tierney however is that with Logan Couture out he’s been getting some first line power play time while also skating on a line with some decent wingers. At only $2600 the young centre is in line for an uptick in ice time and opportunity. He’s a massive value at only $2600.

Tobias Rieder ($4000): Rieder has been a revelation to start the year for Phoenix and is now up to 3 goals and 5 points, through 5 games, to start the season. The talented and diminutive winger was acquired in a nothing trade with Edmonton last year and has now become a mainstay in the Coyotes top 6. With Rieder getting a lot of looks on the PP and facing off against the weaker NJ Devils tomorrow targeting him for value makes a ton of sense.

Logan Couture: is out indefinitely with an ankle issue for the Sharks
