The NHL Cheat sheet is your nighty look at some key matchups, fantasy studs, value plays, and important fantasy news and notes for the upcoming slate.

Highest Totals and Biggest Favorite

Biggest Favorite: The Anaheim Ducks are -163 to beat the Columbus Blue Jackets

Largest Totals: The Dallas Stars and Carolina Hurricanes have the best chance at going over 5.5 goals according to odds-makers.

Stud Goalies (to avoid playing skaters against)

Frederik Andersen ($7000): The Ducks have finally started to win a few games and the main reason why they’ve even been competitive this year is mainly due to the play of Anderson. Through 9 games Anderson only has two wins but also has an outstanding .934 save percentage and a GAA of barely over 2.00… elite, world class numbers. The Ducks finally seem to be getting some swagger back offensively and should come into the game versus the Blue Jackets ready to keep their win streak rolling. I’d avoid rostering players versus Anderson for the time being and definitely consider him as your goalie on tonight’s slate.

Dud Goalies (to possibly target skaters against)

James Reimer ($6400): With Jonathan Bernier on IR James Reimer is now the starter for the foreseeable future for Toronto. Reimer actually has had a couple solid games in his last two starts including a win over offensive powerhouse Dallas. I simply don’t trust Reimer though as he’s never been able to sustain good play for long periods in his career and is simply not a number one goalie. The Leafs are still brutal defensively and have given up at least three goals in 4 of their last 5 games. Definitely target Reimer with your skaters tonight and look to use some Red Wings on your roster.

Hottest Lines

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins ($4800) – Leon Draisaitl ($2800) – Taylor Hall ($6700)

(note: Nugent-Hopkins will skate on second line tonight but still see PP time with Hall/Draisaitl, Jordan Eberle will skate with Hall/Draisaitl at even strength)

This line has been scorching of late putting up an incredible 20 points in their last three games. While the trio won’t necessarily see the ice tonight as a unit at even strength they will see be on the ice together during PP situations and could be reunited late in the game as well if the Oilers are trailing as well. Either way I wouldn’t be hesitant about rostering any of these three as they have been clicking ever since Draisaitl was called up from the AHL and inserted onto the line. A pure scorer, Draisaitl has really benefitted from the playmaking ability of RNH and Hall and won’t be slowed down by his new line mate Jordan Eberle one bit either. The Oilers top 6 is loaded offensively (even with the loss of McDavid). They should be a constant source of fantasy points even against a tougher opponent like the Penguins tonight.

Top Upside and Top Value at Defense

Kris Letang ($5700): Letang and the Penguins take on the Oilers tonight who have looked much improved as a team this year but are still giving up a lot of scoring chances and have allowed the third highest goals per game in 5v5 situations so far in 2015/16. Given Letang’s propensity to roam and the talent the Penguins have up front the chances of him landing you at least a point tonight seem pretty high. In this matchup thogh there is the potential for a lot more and that’s why he’s my higher priced option at D tonight.

Ryan Murray ($3200): If you’ve read this column a lot than you’ve probably seen Ryan Murray mentioned here a lot too. Murray continues to be the main PP quarterback for the Blue Jackets and sees over 50% of the ice time on the point in PP situations for Columbus. Murray’s a quality offensive player which is why his price is just way too low given his ice time in offensive situations. After a slow start Murray’s picked it up of late and now has two goals on the year and three points in his last three games. Until his price rises, make him a nightly target.

Best Superstar to Build Lineups Around

Tyler Seguin ($8700): Seguin continues to tear up the league and is now up to 20 points through 13 games which includes a hat-trick versus his former team the Boston Bruins in his last outing. Seguin currently leads the league in shots on goal and is also not surprisingly in the top ten in individual scoring chances. While Carolina has been decent defensively to start the season they’re not an elite team by any stretch. The Dallas-Hurricane game has the highest over under and highest expected total of the night. Targeting Seguin once again as a cornerstone is probably a good idea for your rosters.

Best Value Plays to Fill out your lineup with

Gustav Nyquist ($5300): While Nyquist isn’t super cheap I do think he gives you pretty elite upside at a discounted price so I’ll include him as a value ply today. Nyquist has been skating on a scoring line with Thomas Tatar most of the year and also sees a lot of time with the first unit PP. I love that Nyquist has been shooting the puck a little more this year (close to three shots per game) and that he’s also got a great matchup versus the Maple Leafs. After a slow start he now has 9 points through 12 games and 3 points in his last three games played. A great value tonight for the upside you’re getting.
