The NHL Cheat sheet is your nighty look at some key matchups, fantasy studs, value plays, and important fantasy news and notes for the upcoming slate.
Biggest Favorite: The Sabres are -155 favorites to beat the Coyotes
Largest Totals:The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers have the greatest odds of going over 5.5 goals according to odds-makers.
Chad Johnson (Buffalo) ($6400): It seems really strange to be putting a Buffalo Sabre player in the goalie section but Chad Johnson is well deserving of his spot here tonight. Johnson has allowed 2 goals in his last three games and hasn’t recorded a save percentage of under .900 in a game since October (and he’s played a lot). To top things off Johnson has a favorable matchup tonight versus the pesky but still offensively thin Arizona Coyotes. I would avoid targeting Buffalo with your skaters and also really consider Johnson as your goalie on this slate. Buffalo isn’t the dumpster fire they were last season.
Karri Ramo ($6700): The Flames got a nice win a couple games ago versus the Stars but overall are still struggling to keep pucks out of their own net. Ramo ranks near the bottom in most statistical categories for starting goaltenders this season and the Flames skaters haven’t given him much help either as their penalty kill is also near last in the league. The Bruins have some talented scorers and are coming off a tough loss to Edmonton which makes this even more dangerous for a bad game from Ramo. Avoid using him and definitely target Boston skaters.
Mike Cammalleri ($5300) – Adam Henrique ($5000) – Lee Stempniak ($3800)
I’ve been super impressed with the way the Devils have played all year given the fact that no one really expected their team to do much. The Devils are by no means a high powered offensive squad but when they do score it’s almost always a result of work done by their top line-Cammalleri/Henrique/Stempniak. As a line this trio is tied for fourth in terms of goals scored by a specific line in the NHL this year and these three have also been responsible for over 40% of the point production for the entire Devils team in 2015. The Devils are coming off a huge win last night against Carolina and this line scored 5 points in the victory. I like them again tonight against the improving but still exploitable Flyers.
Top Upside at Defense
John Klingberg ($5900): The Stars take on the Oilers tonight who’ve struggled for the most part this season and are still letting in more goals than most teams on a nightly basis. Klingberg has been one of the best point producers from the blue line all year and this matchup presents a great opportunity for him to add to his point total. Both the Oilers and Stars like to play up tempo hockey (and not play defense) and Klingberg’s ability to join the rush should be a big factor tonight. He’s definitely the high priced D-Man I’d target and is in a good spot for a big fantasy game.
Shayne Gostisbehere ($3400): Gostisbehere is a recent call up from the Flyers farm team. Since joining the Flyers he’s been a revelation and a fixture on the Flyers first unit PP. The young defenseman is averaging 3 SOG in his last four games and already has 4 goals in 9 games on the season. The production may not keep up but with all of the SOG and extended PP time Gostisbehere is seeing it really makes sense to use him as his price is far too low for his potential right now.
Superstar to Build Lineups Around
Tyler Seguin ($8800): There’s no need to get cute with my pick here tonight. Seguin is easily the best player on the board tonight and also in a great matchup versus the young Oilers who have had trouble shutting down even average offensive teams this year. Seguin had his 8 game point streaked snapped against the Flames but scored last night versus the Canucks to start a new one. He could approach double digits in SOG versus the Oilers who are in the bottom half of the league in shots against on the season. Make room for Seguin tonight and build your lineup around his nightly fantasy awesomeness.
Brock Nelson ($4200): Nelson has been quiet of late but keeps seeing time with John Tavares on the Islanders top line and top PP unit. Nelson is more of a shoot first ask questions later type of player which makes him good for SOG/goals but means he might not be the greatest source of cheap assists. Either way at only $4200 Nelson is too cheap right now considering he’s playing with one of the best players in the league every night and getting plenty of ice time in a very offensive role. He’s one of the best values out there tonight.
Leon Draisaitl ($4300): Well, DraftKings keeps making this pick incredibly easy for us. Dr. Drai is still playing with the Oilers top line and also getting a lot of time on the PP too. Draisaitl’s point production has slowed a bit as the Oilers have really been hurt offensively by the loss of Connor McDavid but he’s still getting opportunities and getting a pretty fair amount of SOG. Tonight the Oilers play the Stars and this matchup has a great chance of seeing some back and forth fire wagon hockey. I don’t only like Draisaitl, but the entire Oilers first line (see the NHL Line Stacks article), and would recommend Draisaitl as a cheap way to get exposure to this game.
