5. Larry Donnell – New York Giants – Week 4 vs. Redskins

Prior to Week 4 of the 2014 NFL season, second-year tight end Larry Donnell only had one career touchdown. He was the recipient of three of Eli Manning’s four touchdown passes resulting in a 45-14 win over the Washington Redskins. The 6-foot-6 tight end looked like Antonio Gates as he caught all three touchdowns in the first half. Donnell finished the night with seven catches and 54 yards. Donnell was one of four tight ends in 2014 to catch three touchdowns in a game.(Antonio Gates, Julius Thomas, Rob Gronkowski) His Three touchdowns alone gives him enough merit to land a top-5 Fantasy Football performance by a tight end.

4. Antonio Gates – San Diego Chargers – Week 2 vs. Seattle

Antonio Gates is what I like to call seemingly ageless. His ability to perform at a high level at the age of 35 is incredible. Week 2 in 2014, against arguably the best defense in football, Gates showed the country how age is just a number. The Charger’s tight end finished the day with seven catches for 96 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers upset the Seahawks 30-21 at home in Qualcomm Stadium. Playing together for nine seasons, Gates and Rivers continue to communicate well on the field. This performance could arguably be a top three fantasy performance in 2014.

3. Jimmy Graham – New Orleans Saints – Week 2 vs.Browns

Week 2 Jimmy Graham was targeted 13 times for 10 catches, finishing with 118 yards and two touchdowns. Vintage Jimmy Graham out leaped Cleveland corner Joe Haden for his first touchdown of the contest. One week prior, the Atlanta Falcons held Jimmy Graham to just three catches and 36 yards. He was the only receiving threat on the day in Cleveland and he was the recipient of both Drew Brees touchdown passes. This performance could also be in discussion as the number one game by a tight end in 2014.

2. Julius Thomas – Denver Broncos – Week 1 vs.Colts

Orange Julius wasted little time starting the 2014 season on a good note and it was clear early in the first half of week 1. Peyton Manning threw three touchdowns to Thomas in the first half, in a game that would be played without Wes Welker. Thomas finished the day with seven catches for 104 yards and three touchdowns. Being only one of four tight ends in 2014 to have three touchdowns in a single game, JT’s game against Indy is a top-3 outing easily.

1. Rob Gronkowski – New England Patriots – Week 8 vs.Bears

Just in case you didn’t know Rob Gronkowski is the best tight end in the NFL and it’s really not even close anymore. Now that I have gotten that out of the way, it is important I discuss the game he had against the Chicago Bears in Week 8. Gronk had nine receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns in a blasting of the Bears at home. The Bears prepared for Gronk all week, but he was still too much of a force to be reckoned with. He caught all nine targets thrown his way, in what turned out to be a 51-23 win for the Patriots. Brady was a surgeon, methodically dissecting an awful Chicago Bears secondary in what looked like a game of Madden on the easiest setting.
