There were a number of huge performances in the NFL in 2014. As we get ready for the upcoming season, let’s take a look back at the top performances of the 2014 season. Here are the top 5 fantasy football games by quarterbacks in 2014.
Also, be sure to check out the other positions in this series:
5. Tom Brady – New England Patriots – Week 8
October 26, 2014, Tom Brady dismantled the Chicago Bears at Gillette Stadium. Brady completed 30 of 35 passes and he threw five touchdowns. He looked like a man on a mission, playing pitch and catch with Rob Gronkowski all afternoon. The Patriots beat the Bears in convincing fashion 51-23. The Bears looked like boxers that had been battered and bruised when Brady was done with them. His 354 yards and 85.7 completion percentage was his third best outing in 227 career games. Oh, and TB12 also had a passer rating of 148.4, which is darn close to pitching a perfect game. Statistically Brady’ game against the Bears was the fifth best Fantasy Football performance by a quarterback in 2014. Tim Wright, Brandon LaFell, and Rob Gronkowski were Brady’s primary receivers, catching all five of his touchdown passes.
4. Aaron Rodgers – Green Bay Packers – Week 10
November 9, 2014, Aaron Rodgers pounded on the Chicago Bears like the New England Patriots had done a couple weeks prior. Rodgers threw six touchdowns to tie the Green Bay game record for a half and tied the leagues record for a half. The NFL’s oldest rivalry turned into a blowout real quick as A-Rod threw six touchdowns in the first half at Lambeau Field. Rodgers was replaced by Matt Flynn midway through the third quarter. Jordy Nelson had receiving touchdowns of 73 and 40, on six receptions for a total of 152 yards. The Packers went on to score the most points against the Bears since 1962. If the Bears kept this game even relatively close Rodgers could have thrown ten touchdowns. Rodgers finished the day 18 of 27 for 315 yards and six touchdowns. Despite only playing a little over a half, A-Rod still had the 4th best fantasy performance by a quarterback in 2014.
3. Ryan Fitzpatrick – Houston Texans – Week 13
In Week 13 of the 2014 season, Ryan Fitzpatrick used his intellect and his right arm to shred his former team, the Tennessee Titans. “Fitzmagic” threw six touchdowns and zero interceptions, with a 147.5 quarterback rating. This comes in as the third best Fantasy Football showing by a quarterback in 2014. On the field, it looked like Fitzpatrick was attempting to dissect the Titans secondary as if he were attempting to perfect the Wonderlic Test. He set a franchise record through the air with six touchdowns. The primary recipient was the second year pro DeAndre “Nuk” Hopkins who was targeted nine times, catching all nine passes for 238 yards. In hindsight this looked the game that the ship had sailed on long time veteran Andre Johnson, and DeAndre Hopkins being the #1 wide receiver in Houston was nearing.
2. Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers – Week 9
In 2014 Ben Roethlisberger, 11 years into his illustrious NFL career decided to set career bests in throwing yards, passing attempts, completions, throwing percentage, quarterback rating, and tie for touchdowns. He arguably had his best supporting cast as well. Week 9 at home against AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens, he put on an absolute clinic for the fans at Heinz field and for fans Worldwide to witness. Roethlisberger threw for 340 yards and six touchdowns to set an NFL record for touchdowns passes in consecutive games (12). Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Martavis Bryant, Le’Veon Bell, and Matt Spaeth all had receiving touchdowns. Coming in as the second best Fantasy Football performance by a Quarterback in the 2014 NFL season. Interestingly enough the old, low scoring, boxing matches, between rivals seem to take on a higher scoring version, yet the physicality remained. Antonio Brown caught 10 passes for 138 and a touchdown. The 6-foot-4 rookie Martavis Bryant had two touchdowns after spending the first six weeks of the season on the inactive list. The Baltimore secondary was torched early and often as they stood around dumbfounded.
1. Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers – Week 8
If someone told me that Ben Roethlisberger had 2 top five Fantasy performances in 2014 I would have called them crazy. All the talk leading up to week 8 was about his opponent Andrew Luck. Big Ben went on to gash the Indianapolis Colts by setting Steeler franchise records by throwing 522 yards and six touchdowns as he picked up his career 100th win. Roethlisberger became the first quarterback in history to throw for over 500 yards in back to back weeks. His performance was easily the top outing in 2014 for a quarterback. Completing 40-of-49 passes on a day where he joined Joe Montana, Tom Brady, and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterbacks in history to win 100 games in 150 of fewer NFL starts.
