FRIDAY’S DFS NEWS NUGGETS

1. John Brown looking iffy for Sunday

We heard a lot about Brown’s dual hamstring issues last week, but there seemed to be more optimism then. This week he seems truly questionable after sitting out practice completely on both Wednesday and Thursday. With the bye looming in Week 9, it makes sense for the 5-2 Cardinals to proceed with extreme caution.

The good news for us is this is a 1pm ET game, so we’ll have official word on Brown nice and year (unlike last week). And although Joe Haden is back and I hate this spot in general for the Cardinals, it’ll be hard not to roster Michael Floyd at $3500 if Brown is inactive. Floyd has seen 22 targets in the last four weeks even with Brown healthy.

2. Dez Bryant will reportedly return Sunday

Bryant is less than two months removed from breaking a bone in his right foot. Yet he’s practiced all week and will reportedly return for Sunday’s home game against the Seahawks. I can’t imagine the Cowboys putting their franchise player out there if he’s not at least close to 100 percent, so that’s not a real concern. But his snaps could be limited as he works his way into game shape, he still costs $8000 (was $8700 when he went down), Matt Cassel is at quarterback and the Seahawks’ secondary fares best against the big/physical wideouts. I’m not ready to play Dez yet.

3. How fat is “Fat Eddie?”

Eddie Lacy is not in play for me against the Broncos’ elite defense this week. But I still find all the “Fat Eddie” rumblings funny/interesting, especially when Lacy was out-touched by James Starks 11-6 in the game before the bye. Lacy is listed at 5’11/234, but was reportedly at 242 in training camp. He insists that the ankle injury did not prohibit him from staying in shape. Lacy added that no one within the Packers has said anything to him about his weight even though everyone on the team does weekly weigh-ins.

“It’s based off photos that float around, so that’s not none of my concern until it comes from the guy upstairs on the third floor,” Lacy said, referencing GM Ted Thompson. “Until it comes from down there, I’m not concerned about it.”

After this week’s brutal matchup at Denver, Lacy has to play at Carolina. By the time the Week 10 home game against the Lions rolls around, he could be below $5000 on DraftKings. I’ll be watching his waistline and market share of carries until then.

4. Steve Smith tweaks knee at practice

The over/under in the Chargers at Ravens game is a whopping 50 with Baltimore’s implied team total sitting at 26.75. That’s how bad San Diego’s defense is. So how are the Ravens going to score all these points? The best bet is Justin Forsett, who struggled in two tough road spots (at SF, at ARZ) the last two weeks but racked up big numbers in the two soft spots before that (at PIT, vs. CLE). The Chargers have given up the most points per game to opposing running backs in the entire NFL.

Some people are also going to want to play Grandpa Steve Smith Sr., who has 19 targets in two games since returning from a back injury. Just be careful though, as Smitty tweaked a knee at practice on Thursday and was listed as limited. He’s also going to see plenty of Jason Verrett, who has had a very solid season despite the unit’s woes. The Chargers shouldn’t let dumpster fire Brandon Flowers anywhere near Smith.
