Well, some might not be so painful. Some might just be down right merciful. But there have been a few eyebrow raising cuts and releases made this past few weeks in the NFL.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the recent news and perhaps some fire-breathing for you.
Da Bears just signed Jimmy Clausen to a one year extension. Anybody else thinking Jay Cutler has a limited number of days left in Chi-Town?
Overshadowing all of this is a subtle but considerable number of franchise tags being throw around these days.
According to Wikipedia:
“In the National Football League, the franchise tag is a designation a team may apply to a player scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. The tag binds the player to the team for one year if certain conditions are met. Each team has access each year to only one franchise tag (of either the exclusive or non-exclusive forms) and one transition tag. As a result, each team may only designate one player each year as that team’s franchise player. It has been designed to reduce player movement (often to bigger markets) which is often evidenced in other major pro sports leagues.”
We can debate the merits of the franchise tag and probably get into a pretty good bar fight over it, so lets just get to the meat of it.
Dez Bryant TAGGED by the Cowboys. Okay he’ll still earn $13 million next year, I’m not crying for him on that front. In fact, I think that amount is generous.
Demaryius Thomas TAGGED by the Broncos as the franchise player. Yeah, “only-winners-get-wings” himself just got ear-tagged by the Blue and Orange.
Jason Pierre-Paul TAGGED by the Giants. The big defensive end isn’t going anywhere for a while. Them’s the breaks bug guy.
Stephen Gostkowski TAGGED as the franchise player by the Pats. Really, New ENgland? You tagged your kicker? Oh well he does have an ESPN commercial; which was just a wee bit too prophetic.
Now a few merciful cuts.
Reggie Bush CUT by the Detriot Lions. Yes, the 2005 Heisman trophy winner has been cut. Okay, he had a down year hampered by a leg injury – that’s kind of important for a running back, so I’m not too surprised to see this one. However, the thunder and lighting combo between him and Joique Bell had some potential. Too bad it was a couple of years too late for Reggie. But have no fear, I don’t think they will be looking to fill the position with a trade, draft pick, or free agent signing. Theo Reddick, a young pup out of Notre Dame has been lurking and glistening in the number three spot in Detroit. I’d look for him to try and break out this year.
Brian Hartline CUT by the Dolphins. Yeah, he had a couple of good years and was moderatly viable in fantasy football, but he hadn’t really made an impression in a while. COuld it have been because the Dolphins hadn’t been viable for a number of years? Yeah, consider this one a mercy cut on both sides.
What does all this mean? Not much for you or I. I just hope the guys that got cut saved their money. And I hope the guys that got tagged, save their money.
It’s a brutal game and heart breaking business.
