When's the last time you heard "We want A-Rod!" … in Boston?

Would you have ever expected this?

After a tumultuous relationship with the arch rival Boston Red Sox, embattled New York Yankees’ slugger (or former slugger?) Alex Rodriguez was serenaded by the Fenway Park faithful at last night’s game with chants of “We Want A-Rod!” in the 9th inning.

Rodriguez is counting down his final days in pinstripes, as the man who sits fourth in MLB history with 696 home runs is set to be released by New York after Friday’s game at home against the Tampa Bay Rays.

With the Yankees in full-rebuilding mode and looking to reset their roster, Rodriguez, 41, and seemingly of no use to the club, has seen his playing time diminish rapidly – he hasn’t appeared in a game since August 2nd against the New York Mets.

For Red Sox fans, this week’s series in Boston would be their last chance to see A-Rod come to the plate. Unfortunately for them, Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi did not oblige. The upside is there’s still two games left in the series, so Red Sox fans might their their wish – but if recent history is anything, don’t expect to see A-Rod until Friday.
