New York Mets

The MLB is in the final two months of its regular season and the playoffs are beginning to take shape. The Yankees are right up at the top of the American League with the Astros and Twins, but it’s the other New York team that has been raising eyebrows.

At the All-Star break, the New York Mets held a 40-50 record and were on their way to an uneventful end of the season. Here we are, 21 games later, and the Mets have the opportunity to fight for a Wild Card spot. With a 15-6 record since the Midsummer Classic, they’re baseball’s hottest team. If they can keep this up, the Mets could earn their fifth playoff berth in the past 20 seasons.

New York starts its next series today in a doubleheader against Miami. The Marlins are the worst team in the National League, making the Mets the favorite in the series. Bettors are going heavy on New York, as 91% of the handle and 88% of the bets have been placed on the Mets in Game 1 with ace Jacob deGrom on the mound. Meanwhile, the Phillies are taking on the Diamondbacks (2.5 GB) and the Nationals are battling the Giants (2.5 GB.) Theoretically, this means that the Mets could jump into a playoff spot before heading into their next series against Washington.

Even if that doesn’t happen, New York will have plenty of opportunities to leap-frog Washington and Philadelphia in upcoming division series, making it very feasible to reach the playoffs. Assuming the Yankees keep up their dominant pace, we might witness an all-NY World Series matchup. Alright, maybe that’s thinking too far ahead. But if you’re curious, the Yankees (+460) have the third-shortest odds to win the World Series, while the Mets (+7000) have the 15th-shortest odds.
