What a night last night. We had players take home some huge prizes on DraftKings and today will be no different. Today, we have a split slate as we usually do on a Saturday, with five games starting at 4:05 and 10 games starting at 7:05. Let’s get you right into things and as always, you can get me on the ol’ Twitter machine @SBuchanan24.
Heaviest Pitcher Favorites
Carlos Martinez vs. Atlanta Braves (-183) – Vegas has had some strange picks for their favorite pitcher on the day lately, at least today I can agree with their pick. Martinez gets a nice matchup against the struggling Braves offense at home. Martinez last start actually came on July 9th, when he faced Pittsburgh. Since then, he had to come out of the bullpen on the 19th against the Mets, as they played in a marathon 18 inning affair, which didn’t go so well. Besides that small blip, Martinez has been fantastic this season. He comes into tonight with a 2.51 ERA to go along with a 1.26 WHIP and a K/9 of 9.3. The Braves have a decent team batting avearge, ranked 14, but everything else is near the bottom of the league. Martinez is certainly one of the top plays tonight.
Jake Arrieta vs. Philadelphia Phillies (-155) Arrieta is the favorite tonight against the Phillies and opposing pitcher Cole Hamels. Yes, Arrieta has been that good this season. Coming into tonight, Arrieta owns a 2.52 ERA to go with a 0.98 WHIP and a K/9 of 9.3. Arrieta faced the Braves in his last outing, another weak offense, and handled it well. In his last two starts agaist, for lack of a better terms, pathetic teams, the Braves and White Sox, Arrieta has scored 36.2 and 41.6 points. The Phillies are just as bad, if not worse then those two teams. Sure, Arrieta is the second most expensive pither on the night, but he will certainly be worth paying up for.
Hector Santiago vs. Texas Rangers (-153) – I keep asking myself this on a daily basis, because it keeps coming up, but are the Rangers that bad? Am I missing something here? Vegas continues to favor pitchers going against them almost on a daily basis. Regardless, I have to report when I’m told. Santiago comes into tonight with a 2.30 ERA to go along with a 1.13 WHIP and a 8.6 K/9. The Rangers offense, unless I’m missing something, really isn’t that awful as Vegas makes it out to be. They’re ranked 18th in batting avearge, 11th in runs scored and OPS, and 10th in home runs. Santiago really has been a huge surprise this season and is averaging 19 points per start. Unless you don’t believe Vegas, at $9100 tonight, he could be a sneaky start tonight.
Top Overall Game Over/Unders
Cincinnati Reds at Colorado Rockies (Coors Field) – 10.5 Over/Under- I know I said this last time he pitched, but this SHOULD be Johnny Cueto last start as a Red. Five days from now we’re onto July 30th and having him pitch that close to the deadline could be risky. So naturally, as a “Thank you for your services as a Red” he gets to start at Coors Field. As always, Coors Field gets the highest run total of the day, at Cueto matches up against Chris Rusin. Cueto, of course, has been lights out on this season with a 2.79 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP with a K/9 of 8.4 It’s been well documented that the Rockies offense is one of the best, as they’re in the top 10 in almost ever offensive category. Rusin is the cheapest pitcher on the day, even though his numbers aren’t that horrible, for a Rockies pitcher. He owns a 3.88 ERA with a 1.49 WHIP and a K/9 of 6. He’s not someome you’d want to trust though, as he averages 11 points per start. The Reds own some serious power, ranked 7th in home runs. As always, look to get some exposure in this if you can.
Toughest Left/Right Matchups
Toughest Pitchers vs. Left Handed Batters
Tommy Milone vs. New York Yankees- Crazy, Milone is the toughest against lefties on a day/night with some seriously quality pitchers going. Milone is holding lefties to a .165 avearge on the season.
Johnny Cueto vs. Colorado Rockies- Cueto has many factors that should entice a lot of teams to give up a decent haul for him with the deadline approaching. One of them should be his numbers against lefties, as he holds them to a .175 average.
Toughest Pitchers vs. Right Handed Batters
Taylor Jungmann vs. Arizona Diamondbacks – Of course, how did you not see this one coming? Jungmann has seriously been nothing less than fantastic since getting the callup from the minors. He enters tonight holding righties to a .183 avearge on the season.
Shelby Miller vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Ohhhhh damn, Miller facing his old team tonight! Maybe he’ll have a little extra on that fastball tonight? He’s been great this season and it’s been one of the only bright spots for the Braves this season. Miller is holding righties to a .188 avearge.
Best Left/Right Matchups
Easiest Pitcher vs. Left Handed Batters.
Danny Duffy vs. Houston Astros – Not a time where you want to struggle against a particular type of hitter, Duffman. The Astros really seem like they’re the real deal in 2015. Duffy is having his struggles against lefties, as he’s allowing a .322 average on the year.
Alfredo Simon vs. Boston Red Sox – Alfredo sauce continues to see his struggles against lefties, even though he’s going against the sad excuse for a Boston Red Sox team this afternoon. Lefties are hitting .314 off of him.
Easiest Pitcher vs. Right Handed Batters
Drew Hutchison vs. Seattle Mariners- Hutchison was slated to pitch yesterday but ended up being scratched because was sick. The real reason, was that he was sick of being crushed by righties, who are hitting him to a tune of .330 on the year. (Yes this was here yesterday. Yes this happened again. Yes this could happen again. Yes.)
CC Sabathia vs. Minnesota Twins- Remember yesterday when I said Pineda should have an easy time against the Twins? Yeah that sucked. Hopefully I didn’t lose all your money yesterday. Sabathia comes into tonight with his usual struggles against righties, where they’re hitting .330 against him.
Randal Grichuk ($4000) – Grichuk has really been making a name for himself since the All Star break. He comes into tonight 9 for his last 26 with four home runs, 10 RBIs, six runs scored, and a “what the hell, why not” stolen base thrown in the mix.
Preston Tucker ($3400) – He’s too cheap to pass up right now. He’s been getting it DONE lately. Tucker is 8 for his last 21 with four home runs, six RBIs, and eight runs scored. Really, get him in your lineup, that price is going to soar soon.
Alexi Ramirez ($2700) – It’s with great displeasure I feature Ramirez here, as he was the one who really put the nail in the coffin for Kluber last night. But, I can’t deny that he’s been great lately. Ramirez is 9 for his last 23 with two home runs, seven RBIs, four runs scored and three stolen bases. But on a serious note Ramirez, I don’t like you.
Best Batter vs. Pitcher Matchups
Albert Pujols vs. Yovani Gallardo- This might not be the same Gallardo that Pujols is used to seeing. Gallardo has been on fire this season! However, history tells us that Pujols might win the battle. Pujols is 12 for 27 against Gallardo with five extra base hits, four of those being home runs and a 1.441 OPS.
Adrian Beltre vs. Hector Santiago- Beltre has been fairly quiet this season, and honestly third base is pretty stacked this year, so it’s easy to forget about a guy like Beltre. Tonight however, he’s got some good numbers against Santiago. Beltre is 7-22 against Santiago with five extra base hits, three of those being home runs, and a 1.303 OPS.
Chris Coghlan vs. Cole Hamels- It’s so funny to see how certain guys just perform so well against high tiered pitchers. Would you ever think Coghlan was a force against Hamels? Coghlan is 9-26 against Hamels with five extra base hits, two of those being home runs and a 1.164 OPS.
We have as slight chance of rain during the Braves Cardinals matchup. It’s extremely small though, so I wouldn’t worry about it. Just make sure to check closer to game time, my weather app has lied to me before.
One Pitcher To Build Lineups Around
Jake Arrieta ($11900) – Sorry guys, obvious pick today. Hard to get away from this one though. Arrieta has a cake matchup against the Phillies tonight, who continue to forget that they get paid to play baseball, not just lose to their opponents. The Phillies come into tonight ranked 23rd in batting avearge, 28th in runs scored, 27th in OPS and 29th in home runs. Truly, what does Arrieta have to worry about here? Arrieta has been so good lately that he’s gotten his WHIP under one, at 0.98. He’s been so good lately that over his last month, Arrieta owns a 1.17 ERA with a K:BB ratio of 30:5 and a WHIP of 0.71. I mean my goodness, he’s a must start today.
Superstar Worth Paying For…
Nelson Cruz ($4700) –Cruz enters tonday with a .307 avearge with 24 home runs 57 RBIs, and an OPS of .929. Today he’s SUPPOSED to face Drew Hutchison, but who knows if that will ever happen. If he does, he has a good matchup against him. Hutchison is allowing a .330 against right handed batters allowing six home runs on the year. They may not sound like a lot, but Hutchison is prone to giving up home runs. Cruz has 17 home runs off of RHP this year and this could be a great game to make it 18. I’m also going to be that jerk and mention that Hutchison may not be 100% here with whatever has been making him miss his starts these past few nights. You’re here to make money right? Be “that guy” and take advantage of a wounded man. Geez, I sound so morbid right now.
Save Big Bucks By Drafting…
Preston Tucker ($3400) – This one is kind of an obvious choice, but again, I love this matchup. Tucker is going up against Danny Duffy, who’s allowing a .322 average against left handed batters. Tucker is, of course, a leftie who’s on fire right now. He’s super cheap, so you shouldn’t have any issue finding him a home on your roster tonight. Fire the kid up!
