We have our typical Monday short slate going on today. One game is being played today, which will not be covered in this article, and 10 games are being played tonight. Let’s jump right into things and as always, you can get me on the ol’ Twitter machine @SBuchanan24.
Heaviest Pitcher Favorites
Doug Fister vs. Arizona Diamondbacks(-163) – Ugh. No, no, no, no. What a horrible pick, Vegas. Somehow, Fister is your favorite pitcher on the night and I couldn’t disagree more. Fister enters tonight with a 4.39 ERA to go with a 1.43 WHIP and a K/9 of 4.7. Yup, this is your favorite tonight. Fister did have a decent outing his last time out against the Marlins, but it’s the Marlins. His opponent tonight is a much more solid offense then whatever Miami trots out every night. The Diamondbacks rank 6th in batting avearge, 8th in runs scored, 10th in OPS and 18th in home runs. I truly cant imagine this start going well for Fister, but if you want to be real bold, he can be a GPP play for you. I’m sure his 7.7 points he averages per start is really going to help you.
Felix Hernandez vs. Colorado Rockies (-143)- Of course, Vegas picking on their new favorite target, the Rockies. But I can’t hate on this pick too much, they’re facing Felix Hernandez. Hernandez enters tonight with a 3.02 ERA to go along with a 1.12 WHIP and a K/9 of 8.6. Hernandez is coming off a rough outing against the Diamondbacks his last time out, which saw him give up seven runs on 12 hits in six innings. He did mange to strike out seven during that game. Hernandez seems to have fallen victim to that type of game a few times this season, but otherwise, he’s looked like his old self in his other starts. The Rockies are still one of the best offenses in the league, so it makes you wonder if another start like his last one is coming up. Hernandez has never pitched at Coors Field, so tonight will be an intersting one to watch for sure.
Francisco Liriano vs. Chicago Cubs (-135) – Liriano gets a start against the strike out happy Chicago Cubs tonight. The Cubs have recently overtaken the Astros as the team with the most strikeouts in the majors. A stat that will certainly benefit Liriano and his K/9 of 10. Liriano has the best matchup of the nigh in my opinon, as he comes into tonight with a 2.92 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP. He’s also has a nice price tag attached to him, as he’s $900 less than the most expensive pitcher of the night, Corey Kluber. I would take a real good look at Liriano tonight, going up against a team that is really struggling offensively. The Cubs have slipped all the way down to 29th in batting avearge, 23rd in runs scored and OPS and 14th in home runs. Don’t let the home runs scare you too much, as Liriano has kept the ball in the park this season, letting up only 10.
Top Overall Game Over/Unders
Seattle Mariners at Colorado Rockies (Coors Field) – 9.5 Over/Under- Even with Hernandez on the mound, this game still is projected to have the highest run total of the night. But let’s be honest, I’m sure Eddie Butler has a lot to do with that as well. Hernandez, as I mentioned, is having another solid season with the execption of a few really awful starts that he’s had. It obviously happens, no one is perfect, but these are’t just bad starts, they’re REALLY bad starts. Hernandez has given up at least seven runs in three starts now this season. His last start against the Diamondbacks saw Hernandez give up 12 hits, the most he’s given up since 2012. So while he’s having another great season, it seems as if he’s starting to be read just a little bit better than he has before. As for Butler, he enters tonight with a 4.82 ERA with a disgusting 1.78 WHIP. The Mariners aren’t that great offensively, but they can certainly hit some home runs. Butler has given up nine in 65 innings this season. As always, you want some exposure to this game.
Toughest Left/Right Matchups
Toughest Pitchers vs. Left Handed Batters
Francisco Liriano vs. Chicago Cubs – Liriano is just mowing down everyone this season. It’s like a video game and he has a cheat code. Lefties wish they had something to use against him, as he’s holding them to a .184 avearge on the year.
Lance McCullers vs. Texas Rangers- Truly, how exciting is this Astros team? They have such a young and dynamic pitching staff, including McCullers. He’s been fantastic since getting the call to the majors, holding lefties to a .190 avearge.
Toughest Pitchers vs. Right Handed Batters
Corey Kluber vs. LA Angels- No love from Vegas today for Kluber, so I’ll give him a little bit of love here. Kluber is holding right handed batters to a .198 average on the year. All the love Kluber, all the love.
Francisco Liriano vs. Chicago Cubs – As if the Cubs struggles offensively weren’t bad enough, now they have to face Liriano. Liriano has been getting it done if you bat left or right. If you bat righty, he’s holding them to a .206 avearge.
Best Left/Right Matchups
Easiest Pitcher vs. Left Handed Batters.
Mike Foltynewicz vs. San Francisco Giants – Lefties have had no problem when facing Foltynewicz this season. He’s allowing a .336 averge against them. Not exactly stellar stuff.
Eddie Butler vs. Seattle Mariners – At some point, a Rockies starting pitcher will appear on this list. It’s almost a guarantee. Here’s Butler, making good on that guarantee. He’s allowing a .333 avearge to lefties this season.
Easiest Pitcher vs. Right Handed Batters
Doug Fister vs. Arizona Diamondbacks- Yup, he’s your top projected pitcher of the night according to Vegas! He does really well against righties, since they only hit .367 against him. I’m sure he’s going to shut down the D-Backs with that average!
Jose Quintana vs. Tampa Bay Rays – When Quintana is pitching, he has to find his way onto this list somehow. It happens almost every single time! Quintana has been struggling a bit against righties, allowing a .297 avearge. But no one is as bad as Fister.
Lucas Duda ($4600) – Duda continues to mash home runs. He just doesn’t stop. Duda is 9 for his last 19 with seven home runs, 10 RBIs, and seven runs scored. His price tag is also moving up a lot lately.
Adam Eaton ($4400) – Eaton has found his way into my lineups almost on a daily basis lately. It’s paid of every night. Eaton is 15 for his last 29 with a home runs, four RBIs, 10 runs scored and three stolen bases. He can do a little of everything for your team.
Jose Abreu ($5400) – Oh, the world we live in. I have two Chicago White Sox and a Mets player featured in my “Hottest Hitters” section. Abreu is 10 for his last 25 with three home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored.
Best Batter vs. Pitcher Matchups
Jose Reyes vs. Felix Hernandez – Today is quite the weak day for BvP, which is a tragedy in itself. Reyes is 6-12 against Hernandez with one extra base hit, which went for a home run, and a 1.250 OPS. Don’t forget, Reyes is on the Rockies now.
Ruben Tejada vs. Tom Koehler – Tejada has seen a decent amount of Koehler in his career and has some good success against him. Tejada is 7-20 against Koehler with four extra base hits and .985 OPS.
Ichiro Suzui vs. Bartolo Colon- Now these two have seen each other a TON in their careers. Suzuki is 24-88 against Colon with six extra base hits, three of those being home runs, and a .701 OPS. I told you BvP was weak today.
A chance of rain/thunderstorms will loom a threat of the Cubs Pirates game because, of course. That is going to be a huge factor when deciding your pitching staff today as my favorite pitcher on the night is…….
One Pitcher To Build Lineups Around
Francisco Liriano ($10,800) – Even with the threat of some bad weather, I’m still going in hard with Liriano. Between the Cubs offensive struggles and Liriano having such a great year, this is a great matchup for Liriano. The Cubs being the team that strikes out the most in the majors is a huge factor for this pick. Liriano carrying a K/9 of 10 has be all giddy about the amount of strikeouts he can potentially get tonight. This is also a Cubs lineup that could be without Kris Byant, as he was removed from yesterdays game for dizziness. He has a chance to play today, but the Cubs might wait it out. At a $900 discount from Kluber tonight, Lirinao has got to be your guy.
Superstar Worth Paying For
Paul Goldschmidt ($5600) –Boy, is Goldy expensive or what? Yup, he certainly is. But I’m going to get him in my tournament roster tonight with his matchup against Doug Fister. First off, Fister is allowing a .367 avearge to right handed batters. .367! He’s a RHP, which of course, Goldschmidt has been crushing this season. Against right handed pitcher, Goldy is batting .342 with 15 home runs and a 1.043 OPS. It’s expensive, but I love this matchup.
Save Big Bucks By Drafting…
Ketel Marte ($2000) – Yup, again. If you want to get some REAL cheap exposure to the SEA COL game, Marte is certainly going to be your guy. He’s been batting leadoff for the Mariners and had a great game yesterday, tallying three hits, scoring one run and drawing a walk. He get a good pitching matchup today against Eddie Butler, who doesn’t really do anything against anyone. Marte is also a great candidate to steal a bag, stealing 20 in the minors this season. Seriously, you won’t find a cheaper player playing at Coors Field.
