Game Notes

Top Pitcher

J.A. Happ – NYY vs. MIN – $9,300 — Of the 10 games being played tonight, four of them did not have lines released, so who knows if Happ will end up being the favorite by the time this is published. Nonetheless, here we are.

Happ will be taking on the Twins for the first time this season as he looks to continue his solid run since joining the Yankees. Since that trade, Happ sports a .298 wOBA with a 4.78 FIP and a K% of 24. He’ll face a Twins team which is downright terrible against lefties, ranking among the worst in wOBA and ISO. Happ also gets a nice discount in salary, as he was $10,400 his last time out against the A’s. We have some great pitching options to choose from tonight but I think Happ is certainly in the mix. Rain could move in during this start, so make sure to keep an eye on that.

Highest Totals

ARI vs. COL – 10 runs – The Diamondbacks return to Coors Field for another series and the highest projected total of the night. The Rockies opened with a 5.4 run total against Zack Godley ($6,400). He’s faced the Rockies twice already, tossing 10.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with a 14:6 K:BB ratio and an 18 DKFP average. Godley has been a bit shaky as of late, averaging 16 DKFP over his last five starts, although he’s struck out at least six in all of them. This is yet another matchup in which I’m not going to go out of my way to get Coors bats in my lineup. With German Marquez ($9,000) taking the mound for the Rockies, it’s not exactly a good spot for the D-Backs either. In what feels like a running theme for me over the past two months, Coors will be left out of my plans for tonight.

Weather Concerns

MIA @ NYM (Citi Field) – I highly doubt this game ever gets going, as nasty weather is in the forecast the entire night. I would go ahead and cross the game off the list and plan on a nine-game slate.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Tonight’s game between the Marlins and Mets has been postponed due to inclement weather.

WAS @ PHI (Citizen Bank Park) – Not as bad as New York, but Philly will be dealing with some rain all throughout the night as well. If they do get this game in, they’ll be in line for a very humid night, which would be ideal for hitting.

NYY @ MIN (Target Field) – This is one game to keep an eye on. Rain will move in midway through this game, which could put Happ’s return to the mound in jeopardy if it’s lengthy. While the chance of rain isn’t high, the timing of it is what has me worried. Check for an update closer to first pitch.

Park Factors

Coors Field – ARI vs. COL Ah yes, Coors Field back in our lives for tonight’s slate. All offensive categories are favored here but you knew that already.

Target Field – NYY vs. MIN Home to our second-most favorable ballpark, Target Field will host the Yankees. All offensive categories are favored here.

Citi Field – MIA vs. NYM Citi Field is our worst offensive ballpark for hitters tonight as they host the Marlins. As you’d expect, no offensive categories are favored here.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Tonight’s game between the Marlins and Mets has been postponed due to inclement weather.

Angel Stadium – TEX vs. LAA The Rangers visit our second worst ballpark for hitters at Angel Stadium. Like Citi Field, no offensive categories are favored here.

Lineup Starters

Pitcher to Build Around

Sean Newcomb – ATL vs. SF – $7,300 – We’re going wayyyyy down the list today for our SP1. Newcomb is just too cheap for this matchup against a Giants team which is struggling immensely at the plate. On the season against lefties, San Fran has a .280 wOBA with a .131 ISO and 22 K%. While that K% isn’t that enticing, the Giants 32 K% over the past two weeks certainly is. That K% is so high, it’s 4.4% higher than anyone else in the league during that span. Newcomb has shown before that he is the ability to post SP1 type results and this is one of those matchups where I think he can.

Heavy Hitter to Pay For

Lorenzo Cain – MIL vs. CHC – $4,700 – Despite putting up some better numbers as of late, I’ll be targeting against Jon Lester ($7,800) tonight. Sure, Lester hasn’t been as horrific as he was to start the second half, but I’d hope not with the cupcake schedule he’s had as of late. He’ll take on Cain, who against lefties sports a .435 wOBA with a .179 ISO and 48% hard-hit rate. With the threat to steal a base as well, Cain should be in an excellent spot for tonight.

Save Big by Drafting…

Daniel Palka – CWS vs. KC – $3,800 – Which Jakob Junis ($8,500) are we getting today? It’s truly maddening since Junis can go out and score 28 DKFP or -28 DKFP (actual numbers could be slightly off). If we get bad Junis, prepare to see the ball fly. Palka is a great source of power on the cheap, who sports a .257 ISO against righties with a .329 wOBA and 38% hard-hit rate. Junis has allowed 27 home runs on the year with 17 of them coming at home.

Stack Em Up

PIT vs. STL (Adam Wainwright) – This can’t go well for Wainwright. I can’t see him going out and being effective against a major league club at this juncture in his career. Yes, he did have a very good minor league rehab stint striking out 23 and 17 scoreless innings. Give him credit, that’s impressive. However, he hasn’t been effective in the majors for over three years now and a 17-inning sample isn’t going to change my mind. I’ll be firing up the Pirates and hope they get to him early and often tonight at Busch Stadium.
