The Rockies, Angels and Twins all exceeded expectations yesterday and rewarded MLB stackers. The Diamondbacks put on the best performance of the night with a 9 run shootout against the Giants (7 runs). Today we have a 13 game slate that provides us with some more opportunities for stacking. Let’s jump right in and find our best options on the evening.
Toronto Blue Jays vs. Mike Wright
It physically pains me to play a stack against my Orioles, but the Blue Jays are in a great spot. Camden Yards has played into the pitcher’s hand this season with a .526 park rating. Mike Wright registered a win in his first start, but ended with a 7.20 ERA in 5 innings. The Blue Jays boast a team handedness wOBA of .335 and a team ISO of .187. I am looking at a 2-5 stack in this one of Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, and Troy Tulowitzki.
Houston Astros vs. Derek Holland
Rangers Ballpark has played into the hands of hitters early during this season. This game is projected at the highest run total of the night at 9 runs. The Astros aren’t favored, but should still put up some runs. Holland has a 2.31 ERA on the season in 11 innings pitched. The Astros have had a lot of success against Holland in the past, with Carlos Correa even posting a 3.03 OPS. I love Correa, Jose Altuve, George Springer and Tyler White in a matchup where the Astros team wOBA is .324.
Texas Rangers vs. Scott Feldman
If you don’t want to roll out the Astros look no further than their opponent tonight. The Rangers are favored at -122 and should also light up the scoreboard. Feldman has started the year off nicely, but hasn’t gotten a win against the Rangers yet (0-3). He has a 3.48 ERA in 10 innings. Feldman also has a .674 OPS against RHBs and a 1.286 OPS against LHBs. The Rangers boast a team wOBA of .319. Prince Fielder has a .987 OPS lifetime against Feldman, and this game looks to be a shootout. I will have lineups with Prince Fielder, Rougned Odor, Delino Deshields and Adrian Beltre on the evening.
Chicago White Sox vs. Matt Shoemaker
The White Sox let us down yesterday, and posted a 0. They have a chance to redeem themselves tonight against Matt Shoemaker. Shoemaker has a great beard, but has been very inconsistent on the mound. He has an ERA of 6.0 and an OPS of .694. The White Sox will be at US Cellular which has a park rating of 1.572 this season. Adam Eaton, Jose Abreu, Todd Frazier and Melky Cabrera all boast a positive handedness wOBA tonight and stack up nicely.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colin Rea
I think people will be off this game due to the lower run total. However, Colin Rea just hasn’t impressed me, and the Pirates’ bats have. Rea has a season ERA of 5.56. He also has an OPS of 1.037 against RHBs and an OPS of .689 against LHBs this season. The Pirates have a team handedness wOBA of .320 and should tee off against Rea. I will have GPP exposure to Andrew McCutchen, David Freese, Gregory Polanco and possibly Colin Walsh tonight.
Baltimore Orioles vs. Marcus Stroman
With everybody on the Blue Jays I find it very contrarian to go the opposite direction with an Orioles stack. The projected run total for this game is 8.5, and the Jays can’t score them all. The O’s have a team handedness wOBA of .329. Stroman has looked good this season with a 4.22 ERA and a .547 OPS. Guys like Chris Davis, Mark Trumbo, Manny Machado, Adam Jones and Matt Wieters are my considerations for an Orioles stack.
