CJ Cup: Weather Report

Like past years at this week’s venue, weather will be a factor. The wind this year doesn’t look like it will as nasty as it was the first year, but it will still be a factor. Gusts are expected to approach 12-15 mph the first day, but should get slightly weaker as the tournament goes on, with the wind dying down to under 10 mph by Sunday. The bigger factor might be the overall temperature this week as wind will combine with slightly cooler temperatures as morning lows are slated in the high 50s to low 60s for the week with highs barely cracking 70 degrees. It’s a smaller field, so stacking tee times likely won’t help much, but tougher scoring conditions should prevail here once again, with a chance for more birdies on the weekend as the wind dies down.

Recent Form Spotlight: Sungjae Im ($9,700)

Im’s been showcasing solid form all fall and it finally paid off last week as he took home a win in Asia at the Genesis Open. His win on the Korean Tour was over a weaker field, but it's still noteworthy as he had been close to achieving victory on the PGA of late too. A solo second at the Sanderson Farms and a T49 in his last PGA start at the Safeway Open highlight what has been an eventful month for Im. The South Korean product is well familiar with JeJu Island, having grown up playing on this week’s course. He’ll be a popular pay-up candidate on DraftKings this week, but has come through for Daily Fantasy players multiple times already this year and should be extra motivated to go for his first PGA win on his home course.

Course Horse Spotlight: Rafa Cabrera Bello ($9,600)

Cabrera Bello will be making his third straight appearance at the CJ Cup and it’s not shocking to see him in the field as his first two visits to JeJu Island have gone extremely well. The Spaniard finished T3 last year, after landing a T11 here in the event’s inaugural edition. Rafa has been playing over in Europe in the fall and while he did miss the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Links event, he sandwiched that poor week with a T6 at the BMW PGA and a solo second place at the Spanish Open. Entering this week’s no-cut event with rising form and some of the best course history in the field, he’s set up as a solid cash game play at under $10K.
