With another FIFA international window upon us, we’re in the midst of a slow week on the MLS front. We have two games Wednesday night and just one on Saturday. Both games tonight have big playoff implications, so let’s take a look at the top targets to take you to the top of the DraftKings leaderboard. As always, I will be posting starting lineups on Twitter (@DraftKicks) as they become available – usually an hour before kickoff. Good luck tonight!
David Ousted – $5,100 – Vancouver Whitecaps – Despite having lost two straight games at home, i’m going back to the well with Ousted tonight. Dallas is on a quick turnaround, having played on Sunday, and will be missing star attacker Fabian Castillo to international duty. Vancouver clinches a playoff berth with a win or tie tonight, so i’m expecting a big performance from Ousted to see them through.
Luis Robles – $5,300 – New York Red Bulls – With so many playoff and Supporters Shield implications tonight, a case could be made for all four goalkeepers to put in a strong shift. There are no standouts on this short-slate, so I tend to favor home goalkeepers with limited options to choose from. The Red Bulls are making a push for the Supporters Shield (MLS Regular Season Champion) and have won five of their last six games at Red Bull Arena.
Others to Consider – Jesse Gonzalez (FC Dallas; $4,400), Evan Bush (Montreal Impact; $4,300)
Kemar Lawrence and/or Connor Lade – $4,800/$4,300 – New York Red Bulls – Lawrence didn’t start last game, but should be back in action tonight. He’s been a reliable source of crosses throughout the season, when he starts. On the other side of the field, Connor Lade has played a part in the Red Bull attack lately. He had an assist last game and has 14 crosses over his last four games.
Jordan Smith – $3,500 – Vancouver Whitecaps – With few options to pick from tonight, i’ll be targeting outside backs with crossing upside. Smith fits the bill – he’s had 7 crosses in his last two starts and should be in line to start again tonight with Steven Beitashour suspended.
Others to Consider – Pa-Mouda Kah (Vancouver Whitecaps; $4,500), Ambroise Oyongo (Montreal Impact; $4,200), Laurent Ciman (Montreal Impact; $4,100)
Sacha Kljestan – $9,500 – New York Red Bulls – Kljestan added another assist over the weekend, making it six consecutive home games with at least a goal or an assist. He’s a key cog to the Red Bull attack, and his upside was given a boost when he took over PK duties midseason.
Ignacio Piatti – $8,000 – Montreal Impact – The Impact should see the return of playmaker Ignacio Piatti, who has been absent the past few games due to an illness in his family. While there is speculation that he may not start, he’s worth including in your lineup if he does. Piatti puts up fantasy points across all statistical categories and carries a reasonable price tag tonight.
Cristian Techera – $7,800 – Vancouver Whitecaps – “The Bug” tallied a goal at San Jose on Saturday and now has 7 goals + 4 assists on the season. He’s been a surprising boost to the Whitecaps attack, but is no longer flying under the radar. Look for him to play a role in tonight’s high-profile match vs. FC Dallas.
Others to Consider – Mauro Diaz (FC Dallas; $9,000), Lloyd Sam (New York Red Bulls; $8,400), Michael Barrios (FC Dallas; $6,500)
Bradley Wright-Phillips – $12,100 – New York Red Bulls – The reigning MLS Golden Boot winner has scored a goal in five of the Red Bulls last six home games. Aside from maybe Drogba, he’s the deadliest true goalscorer on the board and is worth finding room for in your lineups.
Didier Drogba – $10,400 – Montreal Impact – The Chelsea legend was quiet coming off the bench over the weekend. He should be back in the starting lineup tonight, where he’s reeled off 7 goals in 5 starts.Octavio Rivero – $8,600 – Vancouver Whitecaps – Rivero has cooled off since his hot start to the 2015 season. Regardless, he still has 10 goals on the season and is a force to be reckoned with any time he’s on the field. He’s on PK duty and I expect him to have multiple scoring chances tonight.
Others to Consider – Kekuta Manneh (Vancouver Whitecaps; $8,700), Blas Perez (FC Dallas; $6,700), Dominic Oduro (Montreal Impact; $7,800)Flex Appeal
David Texeira – $6,000 – FC Dallas – Texeira broke out with a 27 point performance on Sunday. He bagged two goals and looked sharp going the full 90 up top. With Fabian Castillo away on international duty, Dallas will need another big outing from the Uruguayan if they are to keep up with Vancouver tonight.
Mike Grella – $7,400 – New York Red Bulls – Grella came close to putting his name on the scoresheet against the Crew over the weekend, taking three shots (all on goal) for a respectable 6-point day on DraftKings. With the masses looking to stars such as BWP and Drogba, Grella is worth a shot as a differential play.
