With some of the biggest names in Major League Soccer playing in Sunday’s three game slate, there are plenty of great MLS targets to choose from. I am filling in for Schuyler Redpath today as he is enjoying the FC Dallas game, but you can follow me on Twitter (@jwl_15) for injury and lineup updates throughout the day and here are some of the players I will be targeting tonight:
Jesse Gonzalez – $5,200 – FC Dallas – With Dan Kennedy still dealing with a knee injury, expect Gonzalez to keep his place in goal for FC Dallas. He struggled the last two weeks away from home, conceding six goals in two games. He will be glad to return home where he has earned two of his three wins on the season.
Clint Irwin – $5,000 – Colorado Rapids – Similar to Gonzalez, Irwin will be thrilled to return home after giving up six goals in his last two games. Irwin has won two of his last three starts at home, one of which was a clean sheet. Real Salt Lake struggle to score away from home and Irwin should be the beneficiary on Sunday.
Others to Consider – Donavan Rickets (LA Galaxy; $4,600), Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders; $4,900)
Maynor Figueroa – $4,200 – Colorado Rapids – Figueroa has been great since joining the Rapids, and is always a threat in attack. He has recorded 11+ points in three of his last four games including a goal at home against Sporting KC. As mentioned with Clint Irwin, Real Salt Lake struggle to score away from home which could make things easier on Figueroa when joining the attack.
Michel – $3,800 – FC Dallas – Michel is expected to get the start on Sunday against Houston and if he is in the midfield then he is a must start. Just a few weeks ago Michel put up a ridiculous 28 points including a goal and an assist. He is always a threat on set pieces to score or provide quality into the box. He is a very attacking minded defender and should be considered given his price.
Others to Consider – AJ DeLaGarza (LA Galaxy; $4,600), Sheanon Williams (Houston Dynamo; $4,400), Tyrone Mears (Seattle Sounders; $5,400)
Javier Morales – $9,800 – Real Salt Lake – It should be noted that Morales is listed as questionable on the injury list, but he is still expected to play. He has been outstanding as of late, recording a goal and an assist in each of his last two starts. He has 11+ points in four straight games and is a threat anywhere on the pitch.
Brad Davis – $8,900 – Houston Dynamo – Just when Houston needed a guy to carry them as they push for a playoff position, Brad Davis has been that guy. He has earned 10+ points in six of his last seven appearances, recording three goals and two assists over that time. As mentioned before, FC Dallas are very good at home, but the Dynamo are in a must win situation and Davis will be the guy to carry them if they want to keep pace with Portland and San Jose.
Others to Consider – Steven Gerrard (LA Galaxy; $8,200), Mauro Diaz (FC Dallas; $8,800), Sebastian Lletget (LA Galaxy; $7,800)
Robbie Keane – $11,500 – LA Galaxy – Keane ended a three game goal drought with a goal and an assist against FC Dallas last weekend. The Sounders will be without two key defenders in Ramon Torres and Chad Marshall, so expect Keane to have plenty of chances in front of goal. A point will clinch a playoff spot for the Galaxy and Keane will be the guy to help earn that point.
Obafemi Martins – $10,800 – Seattle Sounders – Martins is currently on fire, scoring a goal in five straight games. He also has four goals in his last three home games and should be considered in every lineup. He has 16+ points in six of his last seven starts and there is no reason to think he will slow down.
Fabian Castillo – $9,000 – FC Dallas – Castillo was named to the Columbian World Cup qualifying squad this week and for good reason. He is one of the most dangerous players in the league and will be a solid play at home against Houston on Sunday. FC Dallas can clinch a playoff spot with a win and Castillo should be riding high after receiving the great news midweek.
Others to Consider – Giovani Dos Santos (LA Galaxy; $10,000), Vicente Sanchez (Colorado Rapids; $7,200), Giles Barnes (Houston Dynamo, $8,500)
Michael Barrios – $6,000 – FC Dallas – Barrios has been a spark for FC Dallas all season, not to mention the goals he can provide. He scored again last weekend against the LA Galaxy with a brilliantly taken chipped header over Donavan Ricketts. He has scored two goals over his last four games and his pace makes him a threat all over the pitch.
Juan Manuel Martinez – $6,000 – Real Salt Lake – Burrito is a guy I have loved since he has come to Major League Soccer. He has one goal and one assist in his four appearances so far this season. If Javier Morales is in the starting lineup, that makes him even more of a threat given Morales’s passing ability. Real Salt Lake will have their work cut out for them in Colorado, but Juan Manuel Martinez should be very influential on Sunday.
