We kick off a long weekend of MLS with Viernes de Fútbol on Friday evening. The two-game slate sees Orlando City SC hosting the New England Revolution, and the Colorado Rapids taking on the San Jose Earthquakes in the nightcap. Both matches will be nationally televised on Univision Deportes, so you can sweat your DraftKings lineups as they playout live. As always, I will be posting starting lineups on Twitter (@FantasySoccerFC) as they become available – usually an hour before kickoff. Let’s take a look at some players I am targeting for the Friday night slate:
Bobby Shuttleworth – $5,100 – New England Revolution – Things don’t get any easier for an Orlando City squad that has scored just one goal in front of their home fans. Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth has been a rock in goal during their recent run of seven games unbeaten. Orlando have been shutout in three of their last four games, and while Kaka is as dangerous as anyone in the league, I like Shuttleworth to notch another win on the road tonight.
Clint Irwin – $4,800 – Colorado Rapids – On a short slate, both home goalkeepers are certainly worthy of consideration. Irwin has allowed exactly one goal in each of his last three outings, and now faces a San Jose team who is playing their second game in four days. The Quakes are having to reshuffle their attack with the loss of forward Innocent Emeghara, and have not looked particularly threatening as of late – scoring just two goals spread over three games.
Others to Consider – Donovan Ricketts (Orlando City SC; $3,300), David Bingham (San Jose Earthquakes; $3,700)
Chris Tierney – $5,200 – New England Revolution – Tierney has been somewhat hit-or-miss recently, with a 23 point performance sandwiched in between a 3 point and 2 point outing. His upside rests in his ability to swing crosses into the box along with the potential to strike a free kick. In a favorable matchup tonight, Tierney will be active in the attack.
Brek Shea – $5,700 – Orlando City SC – The attacker turned defender looks set to return to his natural left midfield position tonight, due to the season ending injury of Kevin Molino. I’ve been looking forward to Shea playing higher up the field, and it will be interesting to see how he interacts with Kaka in the Orlando attack. On a night where defenders are scarce, Shea should be a popular play regardless of the price tag.
London Woodberry – $4,000 – New England Revolution – The Revs outside back contributed an assist in his last game, and has looked good in the attack since being given the starting nod. He’s been vocal about wanting to contribute on both sides of the ball, and as a defender that is music to the ears of fantasy players.
Others to Consider – Michael Harrington (Colorado Rapids; $4,000), Aurelien Collin (Orlando City SC; $3,800), Marvell Wynne (San Jose Earthquakes; $4,200)
Kaka – $9,800 – Orlando City SC – Kaka has been a major letdown thus far. With Orlando City short of options in the attack, teams simply focus on shutting him down. Now that Shea is shifting into a midfield role, I expect the Orlando attack to have a little more flair to it. Kaka is the type of player who could have a monster game any given outing, and on a two game slate he is a risky fade.
Lee Nguyen – $7,900 – New England Revolution – The Revs attacking midfielder came off the bench in their last game, but still assisted on a goal and posted 8 DraftKings points in just 34 minutes of action. I expect him to resume his starting role tonight in a favorable matchup against Orlando.
Dillon Powers – $6,800 – Colorado Rapids – Powers will look to get it going again after a quiet 4 point outing over the weekend. Prior to that, he posted scores of 10,14,15 and 21. He does it all for the Rapids, and comes at a very reasonable price.
Others to Consider – Matias Perez Garcia (San Jose Earthquakes; $6,000), Eric Avila (Orlando City SC; $5,000), Marcelo Sarvas (Colorado Rapids; $5,000)
Charlie Davies – $7,500 – New England Revolution – Chuck D can’t stop scoring. He’s bagged a goal in three straight games and will look to make it four in-a-row tonight against a shaky Orlando City back line.
Chris Wondolowski – $9,500 – San Jose Earthquakes – While the Rapids are a tough task on the road, Wondo is the top forward on the board with only two games to choose from. With Innocent Emeghara done for the year, Wondo is now the go-to guy once again in San Jose. He’s not shy about taking his chances, rattling off five shots in the Quakes midweek win at Houston.
Gabriel Torres – $6,400 – Colorado Rapids – Torres has been a big surprise for the Rapids after a quiet 2014. He looks like a completely different player, and is playing with loads of confidence having scored four goals in his last five games. His recent run of form and cheap price tag make him an attractive target tonight.
Others to Consider – Juan Agudelo (New England Revolution; $7,600), Adam Jahn (San Jose Earthquakes; $5,200), Cyle Larin (Orlando City SC; $5,800)
Dominique Badji – $4,400 – Colorado Rapids – The rookie has been in and out of the starting lineup for the Rapids – but if he’s starting he is worth a look at only $4,400. Badji is lightning fast and would be a handful for a Quakes defense that has already put in a scrappy shift midweek at Houston. Consider Badji as a flex play if he is given the start.
Eric Avila – $5,000 – Orlando City SC – Avila showed well in his last start, and will be asked to play even more of a role in the Orlando attack now that Kevin Molino has been ruled out for the season. He put up 8 points just from crosses, shots and fouls drawn and should post similar numbers or better in what could be a back-and-forth contest tonight in Orlando.
