MLS is in full swing this weekend – with a six-game Saturday slate and a pair of big games on Sunday. I’ll continue to stress the importance of watching for starting lineups so that you aren’t left with a goose-egg from an inactive player. As always, I will be posting starting lineups on Twitter (@FantasySoccerFC) as they become available – usually an hour before kickoff. Let’s jump right in and look at my top targets for Saturday:
Jaime Penedo – $5,500 – LA Galaxy – The Galaxy are back in their home confines where they saw their 29-game home unbeaten streak come to a halt last time out against the Vancouver Whitecaps. Facing an injury-plagued Philadelphia Union squad, LA has an excellent opportunity to start a new streak tonight,. Prior to the hiccup against Vancouver, Penedo notched back-to-back home Clean Sheets in a pair of 1-0 wins for the Galaxy.
Chris Konopka – $5,000 – Toronto FC – Konopka has given up just one goal in last two home games – picking up a win in both. The TFC net minder has a good chance at another solid outing with a fatigued New York City FC squad coming to town. NYCFC are coming off a physical midweek U.S. Open Cup battle with local rivals New York Cosmos, which saw them lose in Penalty Kicks after 120 minutes of soccer.
Others to Consider – Stefan Frei (Seattle Sounders; $6,100), Adam Kwarasey (Portland Timbers; $5,200), Evan Bush (Montreal Impact; $4,700)
Ashtone Morgan – $3,300 – Toronto FC – As noted above with Konopka, Toronto have been solid at home as of late. This target is based on the combination of his cheap price tag coupled with the good matchup. Morgan has a good chance at defensive points and should pick up some added peripheral stats throughout the game as well.
Tyrone Mears – $5,700 – Seattle Sounders – The outside back has played a major role in seeing the Sounders to three Clean Sheets in their last four home games. Not only is he collecting points for his defensive efforts, he’s usually good for a batch of points thanks to his crossing ability. With Seattle short of options in the attack, i’m targeting their defense to be leaned on once again for a result today.
Brek Shea – $5,400 – Orlando City SC – He’s listed as a defender but has been shifted into an attacking role in the Orlando City midfield. Even if he doesn’t earn defensive bonus points, i’m targeting Shea to collect some fantasy points through his offensive contributions.
Others to Consider – Dan Gargan (LA Galaxy; $4,500), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy; $4,500), Jack Jewsbury (Portland Timbers; $4,700), Fabinho (Philadelphia Union; $4,600)
Felipe Martins – $6,400 – New York Red Bulls – Felipe Martins has been a model of consistency for both the Red Bulls and fantasy owners. He’s averaging 9.7 DraftKings points per game on the season, making the return well worth rostering at just $6,400.
Marco Pappa – $7,600 – Seattle Sounders – The Guatemalan playmakers return from international duty couldn’t come at a better time for the Sounders. With Dempsey and Martins both out, Pappa will be relied on even more to pull the strings in the Seattle attack this afternoon.
Ignacio Piatti – $8,200 – Montreal Impact – The Impact’s attacking cog has posted some big DraftKings performances over the past few weeks – contributing a handful of goals and assists over that span. He’ll look to keep the fantasy points coming at home tonight against the expansion Orlando City SC – who are coming off a draining 120 minute midweek USOC match.
Others to Consider – Cristian Maidana (Philadelphia Union; $7,600), Kaka (Orlando City SC; $11,400), Pedro Morales (Vancouver Whitecaps; $8,200), Michael Bradley (Toronto FC; $6,300)
Sebastian Giovinco – $10,400 – Toronto FC – The Atomic Ant has been unstoppable since his move to Major League Soccer. Giovinco has seven goals and six assists on 61 shots this season – and I expect him to pepper NYCFC with shots today, adding to his league leading 28 shots on goal.
Bradley Wright-Phillips – $9,300 – New York Red Bulls – The 2014 MLS Golden Boot winner leads the Red Bulls with 5 goals on the season. Vancouver is coming off a big 1-0 win on the road at LA, but I expect BWP to test the stingy back line early and often – piling up DraftKings points along the way.
Robbie Keane – $9,200 – LA Galaxy – The 2014 MLS MVP hasn’t scored in league play since the Galaxy’s second game of the season back in March. However, he’s back in good health and struck for a midweek hat-trick in LA’s 6-1 Open Cup win. He’ll be eager to get back on the scoresheet tonight as the Galaxy look to get back on track at home.
Others to Consider – Jack McInerney (Montreal Impact; $7,000), David Villa (New York City FC; $10,700), Octavio Rivero (Vancouver Whitecaps; $8,900)
Sebastian Lletget – $4,500 – LA Galaxy – Lletget is off to a quick start since joining the Galaxy last month. He scored the lone goal in LA’s 1-1 draw with the Crew last weekend and also contributed a goal and an assist in their 6-1 Open Cup win on Wednesday. His playing time has been somewhat sporadic, but i’m hoping his stellar play earns him a starting spot tonight.
Lamar Neagle – $7,100 – Seattle Sounders – Neagle looks to benefit the most from the Sounders midweek U.S. Open Cup fallout that saw them lose both Obafemi Martins (injury) and Clint Dempsey (meltdown). He had a goal and an assist last weekend, and will be asked to shoulder the load once more with their top attacking options on the shelf.
