Soccer Sunday features a pair of nationally televised matches – kicking off with the Seattle Sounders hosting expansion Orlando City SC (5:00PM ET, ESPN2). There are numerous players wearing the Questionable tag heading into today, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for starting lineups before locking your rosters in. As always, I will be posting starting lineups on Twitter (@DraftKicks) as they become available – usually an hour before kickoff.
Stefan Frei – $4,200 – Seattle Sounders – The Sounders are in a free fall right now, having lost eight of their last nine games. A home game against an Orlando City attack that was shutout last weekend could be just what the Sounders need to get back on track. Despite their recent bad run of form, Frei is ranked third in the league in both shutouts and saves. I like the home ‘keeper at a discount today.
John McCarthy – $4,000 – Philadelphia Union – The Union net-minder has kept a clean sheet in two straight contests across all competitions. Tonight McCarthy faces the same Chicago Fire team he held scoreless on Wednesday in Philadelphia’s 1-0 US Open Cup semi-final victory.
Others to Consider – Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire; $3,700), Tally Hall (Orlando City SC; $5,100)
Tyrone Mears – $5,200 – Seattle Sounders – Mears has five straight games with two or more crosses, and continues to be a threat on the wing. While the Sounders form has taken a dive as of late, I’m targeting them to get back on track today.
Fabinho – $4,200 – Philadelphia Union – The speedy Brazilian offers attacking flair on the left flank for the Union. He has 2+ crosses in three of his last four outings, and earned a +5 clean sheet bonus last weekend.
Joevin Jones – $4,800 – Chicago Fire – Jones had a whopping 8 crosses last weekend, the third time this season he’s whipped in 6+ crosses. With DraftKings awarding points for crosses into the box, Jones is worth consideration regardless of if the Fire pitch a clean sheet.
Others to Consider – Dylan Remick (Seattle Sounders; $3,600), Corey Ashe (Orlando City SC; $4,200), Chad Marshall (Seattle Sounders; $3,500)
Kaka – $10,800 – Orlando City SC – While he was quiet in last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Philadelphia, Kaka is still the most dangerous player on the board. He has two assists in three games, and Orlando City will look to the former FIFA World Player of the Year to make things happen at Seattle this afternoon.
Cristian Maidana – $8,200 – Philadelphia Union – The Argentine continues to be a consistent source of fantasy points in the midfield. Maidana has six assists in his last six games, and he looked sharp in midweek US Open Cup action against the same Chicago Fire he faces today.
Shaun Maloney – $6,400 – Chicago Fire – Maloney has two goals in three games. With the Fire struggling to keep their strike force healthy, the Scottish international has taken on a role higher up the field. He has a nice upside for being priced at just $6,400.
Others to Consider – Harry Shipp (Chicago Fire; $7,200), Tranquillo Barnetta (Philadelphia Union; $5,000), Lamar Neagle (Seattle Sounders; $6,400)
Obafemi Martins – $8,900 – Seattle Sounders – The return of Obafemi Martins couldn’t come at a better time for the Sounders. The Nigerian trained in full all week, and all signs are pointing to him making his return to the starting lineup. His strike partner Clint Dempsey is questionable after missing out last weekend with a hamstring injury. With the Sounders desperate for goals, i’m expecting Martins to see plenty of chances to add to his team-leading goal tally.
CJ Sapong – $7,200 – Philadelphia Union – The goals have dried up over the past couple of games, but Sapong continues to occupy the lone striker role for the Union and will continue to have opportunities to score. He leads the Union with seven goals on the season, and i’m pegging him to put his name on the scoresheet once again today.
Cyle Larin – $9,100 – Orlando City SC – The rookie sensation leads Orlando City in goals scored and has five goals in his last four games. In addition to the goals, the Canadian international is picking up fantasy points through shots, shots on goal and fouls drawn. If Orlando City break through for a goal, there is a good chance Larin will be involved.
Others to Consider – Kennedy Igboananike (Chicago Fire; $5,400), Fernando Aristeguieta (Philadelphia Union; $10,500), Jason Johnson (Chicago Fire; $4,800)
David Accam – $6,800 – Chicago Fire – This play comes with an asterisk, as Accam has been dealing with a hamstring injury that has limited him in training this week. If he goes, he’s an excellent play at just $6,800. In limited action, Accam has scored 6 goals in 12 games this season.
Sebastien Le Toux – $5,500 – Philadelphia Union – Le Toux has a pair of goals in his last three contests. Before putting up a dud last weekend in Orlando, Le Toux had back-to-back 13+ DraftKings point outings. He’s swinging in crosses and firing off shots when he gets a look, piling up the fantasy points along the way.
