Major League Soccer takes over Yankee Stadium tonight with New York City FC hosting D.C. United. DraftKings has combined the Thursday night game with the lone MLS game on Friday for a two-game slate. There are some injury concerns in both games, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for starting lineups as they are released. As always, i’ll be posting lineups on Twitter (@DraftKicks) as they become available — usually an hour before kickoff. Here are my targets for the short slate:
David Bingham – $5,000 – San Jose Earthquakes – The GK options aren’t great with just two games to select from, but I think Bingham has the most upside of the four starters. He’s facing the worst offense in the league in the Colorado Rapids, and kept a clean sheet in his last game at home.
Bill Hamid – $4,800 – D.C. United – Hamid stood on his head in D.C.’s 1-0 win at Montreal over the weekend. The U.S. Men’s National Team star had 8 saves en route to a monster fantasy day. NYCFC has 11 goals over their last three games at Yankee Stadium, so i’m not banking on a clean sheet, but after his recent outing I like Hamid’s chances at picking up points through saves.
Others to Consider – Josh Saunders (New York City FC; $4,400), Clint Irwin (Colorado Rapids; $4,200)
Angelino – $4,600 – New York City FC – The Manchester City starlet has been an exciting addition to NYCFC. He has an assist in two straight games at home and continues to look dangerous joining in on the attack.
Taylor Kemp – $5,100 – D.C. United – Kemp has 7+ fantasy points in his last two outings, including breaking through for a goal and an assist in D.C. United’s wild 6-4 win over Real Salt Lake two games ago. If the goals start flowing at Yankee Stadium tonight, look for Kemp’s fantasy production to benefit.
Chris Korb – $5,000 – D.C. United – There have been over five goals scored in each of the last three games at Yankee Stadium. D.C. United’s wing backs have been active in joining in on the attack, and tonight should be no different. Korb has two crosses in four consecutive games, and had a two-assist game just two games ago.
Others to Consider – Iraola (New York City FC; $4,100), Shaun Francis (San Jose Earthquakes; $4,100), Marc Burch (Colorado Rapids; $3,000)
Matias Perez Garcia – $8,200 – San Jose Earthquakes – This play comes with an asterisk, as MPG has been dealing with a niggling leg injury that has kept him out of the Quakes last games. Prior to his absence, Garcia was consistently hitting 8+ DK points per game on the strength of crosses and fouls draw alone.
Thomas McNamara – $6,100 – New York City FC – Considering the star power surrounding him, Tommy Mac has been a revelation in the NYCFC midfield this season. McNamara has two goals and an assist in his last two home outings and continues to be one of the best values plays on the board at just $6,100.
Shea Salinas – $5,500 – San Jose Earthquakes – Salinas had 7 crosses in his last home game and is one of the best crossers on the two-game slate. It’s been a few games since he turned up with an assist, but with a lack of options at midfield, Salinas is worthy of consideration on a short slate.
Others to Consider – Andrea Pirlo (New York City FC; $6,300), Mix Diskerud (New York City FC; $7,000), Chris Pontius (D.C. United; $6,500)
David Villa – $12,500 – New York City FC – The priciest player on the board will be highly owned in the Thursday-Friday contests – and rightfully so. As noted above, the goals have come in bulk at Yankee Stadium. While D.C. usually presents a stout defense, they did allowed four goals in a 6-4 win against RSL just two games ago. Despite rattling off five shots, Villa was held scoreless against cross-river rival NY Red Bulls over the weekend. However, Spain’s all-time leading scorer is back at home tonight – where he has five goals and two assists in his last three games.
Alvaro Saborio – $7,800 – D.C. United – With Fabian Espindola out injured, Saborio will be asked to shoulder more of the scoring load. Prior to being held without a shot in D.C.’s 1-0 win over the weekend, the Costa Rican had at least three shots in three consecutive games. Against a leaky NYCFC back line, I predict Sabo breaks through for a goal tonight.
Chris Wondolowski – $9,200 – San Jose Earthquakes – Wondolowski has been a letdown as of late, registering a total of three shots in his last three games with no goals. A matchup with the visiting Colorado Rapids could be just what Wondo needs to break out of his funk. He’s a proven goalscorer and I’m confident he’ll get back on track soon.
Others to Consider – Chris Rolfe (D.C. United; $7,600), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids; $6,400), Jairo Arrieta (D.C. United, $6,300)
Vicente Sanchez – $6,100 – Colorado Rapids – Sanchez had a whopping eight crosses over the weekend, converting one of those into an assist in Colorado’s lone goal against Columbus. He’s been flying under the radar, but has been consistently earning fantasy points across all categories. As long as he continues to start, Sanchez is firmly on my radar.
Quincy Amarikwa – $6,600 – San Jose Earthquakes – Amarikwa scored another goal over the weekend, making it four goals across four games. He’s hit double-digit DraftKings points in his last four games, and has an excellent matchup against the Colorado Rapids.
