Sunday’s slate is surprisingly larger than usual, so expect there to be plenty of different lineup options for your enjoyment. In today’s EPL Targets I will be analyzing some of the best plays for this slate of games and point out some of the best values based on price. Also follow me on Twitter (@jwl_15) for injury and lineup updates throughout the weekend.
Petr Cech – ($4,900) – Arsenal – Cech will once again be the top goalkeeper to use this weekend as Arsenal will have a great matchup at Aston Villa. Cech has earned double digit points in three of his last four starts, including a 20 point performance midweek against Olympiacos. Aston Villa have only scored three goals over their last four games and will likely struggle against Arsenal and one of the top defenses in the league.
Kasper Schmeichel – ($4,100) – Leicester City – Schmeichel continues to play well as Leicester City are now top of the Premier League midway through December. He has earned a win in five of his last six starts, including three clean sheets. He will now face Chelsea at home who have only scored once in their last four games. Expect Schmeichel to perform well on Monday in this great matchup.
Thibaut Courtois – ($3,800) – Chelsea- Courtois returned to the Chelsea starting lineup last weekend for his first Premier League start since August. He will have a difficult matchup against a Leicester City team that leads the Premier League in goals scored. Expect Courtois to see plenty of shots, but the Belgium International is a proven shot stopper and is considered a top goalkeeper for a reason.
Alberto Moreno – ($4,600) – Liverpool – Moreno will be the top defensive option in the Sunday slate as he continues to impress on the left side of the Liverpool backline. After another double digit performance last weekend, he now has scored 10+ points in seven straight games. He has averaged seven crosses per game over the last four weeks and with Christian Benteke’s aerial threat, Moreno will be providing plenty of chances for the central attackers.
Nacho Monreal – ($4,300) – Arsenal – Monreal makes his second straight appearance on the “studs” list after earning double digit points for the fourth straight game in Arsenal’s midweek Champions League clash. With the form of Olivier Giroud, the Arsenal fullbacks have been getting more and more comfortable when it comes to sending crosses into danger areas. Aston Villa have the worst goal differential in the Premier League, which bodes well for both Monreal and his fullback partner, Hector Bellerin. Expect both to get forward as often as possible and provide quality crosses into the box for the very much in-form, Giroud.
Leandro Bacuna – ($2,800) – Aston Villa – Bacuna is likely to get the start in defense for Aston Villa against Arsenal on Sunday. He is well known for his attacking abilities, making appearances on the wing for Aston Villa many times over his Premier League career. Although he will likely be forced into a more defensive role against the high powered Arsenal attack, Bacuna should provide some threat on set pieces. He has a very dangerous left foot and Arsenal have been poor on set pieces so far this season, so if Bacuna gets the start then he could be a sleeper play on Sunday.
Paul Dummett – ($2,700) – Newcastle United – Dummett continues to get the start with Massadio Haidara’s out with an injury and he has fared pretty well. Although he offers little threat in attack, he earned double digit points last weekend and should get another start at full-back for Newcastle United. Tottenham were held scoreless last weekend for the first time since October. Although they will be faced with a very difficult task, Newcastle will look to earn their second straight clean sheet.
Mesut Ozil – ($7,800) – Arsenal – After another assist last weekend, Ozil has now scored a goal or earned an assist in six straight Premier League games. Arsenal will once again be without the creativity of Alexis Sanchez on Sunday, so Ozil will be relied on to create much of the opportunities. Aston Villa have conceded the third most goals in the Premier League this season, so expect Ozil to create plenty of chances for the attackers ahead of him on Sunday.
Riyad Mahrez – ($8,500) – Leicester City – Mahrez’s dream season continued last weekend after he scored a hat-trick against Swansea City last weekend. He continually scores 10+ points week in and week out, making him a very consistent and valuable option in the midfield. Leicester City will be facing a surprisingly bad Chelsea team on defense at home. Leicester City may be facing Chelsea at the perfect time as they have only earned four points over their last six games.
Jordan Henderson – ($3,200) – Liverpool – Henderson has recovered from his lengthy injury spell and returned to the Liverpool starting lineup in their midweek Europa League game. If he is in the starting lineup on Sunday, then Henderson is a must start given his significantly low price. In only two games this season, he was able to pick up an assist and will likely take on most of the set piece duties for Liverpool once he reaches full fitness.
Dele Alli – ($3,800) – Tottenham – Although Dele Alli may be considered a more defensive minded midfielder, he has put up some impressive fantasy numbers as of late. He has earned 11+ points in three of his last four starts, which includes two goals scored for Spurs. His midfield partner, Eric Dier, could be out on Sunday which may limit his ability to get forward and join the attack, but his numbers are something you can’t ignore. Expect Spurs to get plenty of chances against a Newcastle United team that have conceded eight goals over their last three games.
Jamie Vardy – ($8,100) – Leicester City – Vardy’s record breaking streak came to an end last weekend against Swansea City, but he still was able to contribute in a big way. He earned double digit points for the tenth straight week with an assist on one of Mahrez’s three goals. He will now face a Chelsea team that have conceded 24 goals on the season, which is the fifth worse in the Premier League. Expect Vardy to get plenty of chances on Monday and don’t be surprised if he starts another goal scoring streak.
Olivier Giroud – ($7,000) – Arsenal – Giroud pulled off one of the most impressive Arsenal performances in recent history midweek as his hat-trick pushed Arsenal into the final 16 of the Champions League. He now has 13 goals in all competitions this year and is proving most of his doubters wrong. With the talent and creativity around him for Arsenal, Giroud will continue to get plenty of chances to find the back of the net, especially this weekend against the worst defense in the Premier League.
Joel Campbell – ($4,400) – Arsenal – If it wasn’t for Giroud’s hat-trick midweek, Campbell would have likely won Man of the Match against his former team, Olympiacos. He earned double digit points for the third time in four starts, and provided Giroud with one of the assists of the season on Wednesday. He also added a goal against Sunderland last weekend to help jumpstart the Arsenal attack, as Campbell looks to have firmly secured his place in the squad even with the return of both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from their injuries. Expect Campbell to get another start on Sunday and with Alexis still out, he will have to be relied on once again to create and score goals from his wing position.
