Monday’s DFS News and Nuggets

1. Vardy king of the goals…and the obscenities

Alarm bells will be ringing throughout the daily fantasy football world after Jamie Vardy decided to flip off the linesman after he was given offside on Saturday (presumably he thought he was still playing Sunday league, where anything goes). The Football Association and Premier League don’t take kindly to obscene gestures on the field of play. Jack Wilshere, the Arsenal central midfielder, was banned for two matches for making the same single digit salute at Manchester City fans in late 2013. Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, meanwhile, was slapped with a one-game ban for doing the same against Leeds United in a Championship game in the same year. You’d expect Vardy to get a similar ban and/or fine that will mean he misses the visit to Newcastle following the international break.

That’s bad news for Vardy’s quest to equal Ruud van Nistelrooy’s consecutive scoring record, which stands at 10 games, because Newcastle represents a far easier chance for him than the subsequent fixture against a stingy Manchester United side. For daily fantasy football players: continue to pick Vardy until the run is over.

2. Bilic optimistic on star man

Dimitri Payet has been tearing it up where daily fantasy football is concerned and his early departure from Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Everton left many users ruing their luck. Thankfully Hammers’ boss Slaven Bilic doesn’t envisage the attacking midfielder being out for very long. He could even return for the visit to Tottenham Hotspur following the international break. The key to it all seems to be that Payet wandered off without a stretcher. Having said that, Enner Valencia, the player that replaced Payet and then was replaced himself, should also be ready for Spurs and he even needed a stretcher to leave the pitch. Should Payet be out, it would be worth steering clear of any West Ham players until he’s declared fit.

3. Dwight Gayle out for two-to-four weeks

The Crystal Palace striker is facing up to a month out after picking up a hamstring injury during training last week. Gayle has a Grade Two hamstring tear that showed up on an MRI scan following training on Friday. First team coach John Salako thinks the best case scenario is that Gayle returns in two weeks, which would mean he only misses the home clash against Sunderland. It’s just the latest piece of bad news for Gayle as Connor Wickham has just returned from a long lay off and will now be manager Alan Pardew’s number one choice as striker. That’s before you see that his preference is to play Yannick Bolasie as a centre forward ahead of Gayle. Taking this into account, Gayle won’t be missed by many daily fantasy players. He might even leave in January. Watch this space!

4. Mamadou Sakho pulls out of France squad

Heavy metal football experienced its first ever Premier League defeat against Crystal Palace on Sunday and lead guitarist/vocalist Jurgen Klopp’s week has kicked off badly as first choice centre back Mamadou Sakho pulled out of the French squad due to a knee injury. Sakho was substituted after twisting and spraining his right knee during the defeat, and will not play in either of France’s upcoming international friendlies. An MRI scan scheduled for today will tell Klopp how long the centre back will be missing. Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in the league since the arrival of Klopp and Sakho doesn’t offer anything for fantasy purposes at the attacking end of the pitch. As such, he won’t really be missed by users.
