FFWC Recap: aejones Wins $5 Million

“I guess when you win $5M, you’re gonna need a bigger wallet.” – aejones

It was a journey that started back in December when 200 FFWC finalists were cut down into the Final 10. That first weekend in San Diego was filled with late drama and plenty of excitement down the stretch but nothing quite like how the Final 10 played out in Los Angeles this weekend. 10 contenders came to Los Angeles with huge dreams and at the end of the weekend, aejones took down the largest prize in fantasy football history.

Coming into the weekend, CONDIA had a stronghold on the competition with a nearly 30 point lead over the field and a 49 point advantage over the champion, aejones. Aejones, or Aaron Jones, started his trip to Los Angeles in 5th place for $300,000. After an incredible performance in the Final 10, he finished his Los Angeles visit as the FFWC champion and holding up a check for $5 Million.

“I owe a fruit basket to Martavis Bryant.” – aejones

Going into the final day, aejones was in the middle of an absolute battle with 2nd place finisher danny1234. Danny1234 led for most of Sunday but a huge game from Martavis Bryant, who was on just three Final 10 lineups, pushed Aaron to victory. Aaron got 57 DraftKings points out of his three players in the final game of the weekend and that was enough for him to finish the tournament with a comfortable 14 point win.

There was a lot of talk about how important the cumulative scoring would be given that CONDIA had such a sizeable lead but it really was the 2nd round that separated the champion from the pack. Aejones outscored the other Final 10 contenders by an 11 point margin in the main event in Los Angeles.

His lineup was anchored by a slew of Arizona Cardinals and was certainly aided by the extra time that Cardinals offense got in the overtime period. With Carson Palmer, David Johnson, Michael Floyd, Larry Fitzgerald and the Cardinals defense, his lineup was certainly unique from the other contenders. But he knew he needed to be bold to overcome the deficit he faced in the final round and it was that bold strategy that not only defined his FFWC but defined Aaron Jones as a fantasy football legend.

There was plenty of drama that sorted out places 2 through 9 on Sunday as well. Danny1234, who finished 2nd, led for most of the day but was definitely in a tough position trying to shield off aejones heading into the Broncos/Steelers game. He had just two players remaining, both of whom were on aejones’ lineup. His lead didn’t hold but he certainly will be happy with the $2 Million second place check!

FOX’s ‘At The Buzzer’ interviewed him earlier in the day when he was still in line for the $5M top prize.

It’s hard to call winning a million dollars a disappointment, but CONDIA has to be frustrated with how his trip to Los Angeles went. He came in with a whopping 30 point lead over the field but a major injury to Randall Cobb early in the Packers game left him with a 0 in his lineup and an uphill climb on the leaderboard. He was overheard telling friends late on Sunday that he was hoping for 3rd place and that’s exactly where he ended up, despite finishing 8th in the Final 10 round.

The rest of the top five was rounded out by underjones (4th) who had the third highest Final 10 score and moved up from 6th place after part one in San Diego. In fifth place was one of the best stories of the tournament, rockenraven. Eddie, rockenraven, Rybolt has overcome a lot in life and gave us an inspirational tale heading into Los Angeles. He hung with some of the best fantasy football players in the world and won’t be disappointed with a $300,000 payday from this year’s FFWC.
