A lot of people around the Cincinnati Bearcats football program questioned Head Coach Tommy Tubberville this week, as he decided on Wednesday to start Quarterback Gunner Kiel … who had recently been cleared by the medical staff after suffering a “head and shoulder injury” vs. Miami University this most-recent Saturday.

“Kiel was hurt on a roughing-the-passer penalty early in the third quarter of UC’s 37-33 win at rival Miami University last Saturday. After Kiel hit his head on the turf and was shaken up, he was replaced by redshirt freshman Hayden Moore.

Tuberville said Tuesday that Kiel’s injury was more to his upper shoulders than his head. Kiel felt stiffness but wanted to return to the game, Tuberville said, but was held out as a precaution.

“We said, hey, we’re not going to take any chances,” Tuberville said. “He’s got a long year in front of him.”

Well, in the first quarter vs. Memphis tonight: Kiel attempted a QB sneak and got absolutely annihilated by Tigers defensive back Chauncey Lanier, who was initially ejected for targeting before the officials overturned the penalty upon video review.

Kiel laid motionless on the field for upwards of ten minutes, and was eventually carted off the field with what appears to be a gruesome head injury.

I’m not going to nor qualified to say if Kiel was rushed back too early, or, the medical staff misdiagnosed Gunner’s initial head/shoulder injury … but, this is bad. Like, really bad.

The good news is that Gunner appears to be OK, depending on your definition of ‘OK’…
