While these power rankings usually tell us which teams and players have been the most profitable over the past week, we’re going to broaden the scope and look back at 2019 as a whole. This piece will focus strictly on the teams that made bettors the most money thus far during this calendar year.
1) New England Patriots
2) Toronto Raptors
4) Philadelphia Eagles
5) Clemson (CFB)
6) St. Louis Blues
7) Virginia (CBB)
8) Auburn (CBB)
9) Atlanta Braves
10) Portland Trail Blazers
Patriots (-133) defeat Rams in Super Bowl LIII
DraftKings Sportsbook offered an extremely competitive price on the Patriots in the Super Bowl, as they closed as high as -180 favorites in some places. It offered great moneyline value on New England, who needed all the way until just seven minutes left in the game to score the go-ahead touchdown — the only one of the game. The Pats were spectacular on the defensive end, limiting one of the most productive offenses we’ve seen in recent memory to a mere three points. While the price was ideal for New England’s bettors, let’s be real — people love to bet on the Super Bowl. That obviously helped play a role in getting more bets in, and therefore more people got paid out.
Raptors (+117) dethrone the Warriors in Game 6
This is an interesting one, because as well as terrific as the Raptors looked in this series, the Warriors had life right up until Klay Thompson tore his ACL. Kevin Durant’s torn Achilles was devastating for Golden State’s backers, like myself. But the Dubs were still 2.5-point favorites in Game 6, and looked like they’d be forcing a do-or-die Game 7 in Toronto … until Klay went down late in the third quarter, leading the team with 30 points. That was just enough for Toronto to get over the hump, who also helped out those with enough faith to back them at +235 entering the series.
Clemson (+170) upsets Alabama in National Title
Alabama was a heavy favorite once again in the title game, but this time, Clemson was able to prevail. This one was a shootout right out of the gate, with Clemson taking a 14-13 lead into the second quarter. The Tigers went on to dominate the second and third periods, outscoring the Tide by a combined score of 30-3, before a surprising scoreless final frame. Trevor Lawrence was spectacular for Clemson, going for 347 yards and three touchdowns through the air. With Tua Tagovailoa returning to Alabama, these two teams are the favorites to win it all again next season — DK Sportsbook is offering a prop that gives you Alabama or Clemson to win the title at -190.
Blues (+160) dominate Game 7 to win the Stanley Cup
After an encouraging 5-1 victory on the road in Game 6, the Bruins couldn’t come through on home ice in Game 7. Boston peppered the net with pucks in the first period, but couldn’t get anything past Jordan Binnington. The Bruins outshot the Blues 33-20, yet lost the game 4-1. In the end, playing the road team would’ve been extremely profitable in the Stanley Cup Final, as the away team won five of the seven games in the series. Things really came full circle for the Blues here, who once had the worst record in the NHL before getting hot down the stretch. We all have heard the story of a local St. Louis man that put $400 on the Blues to win the title in Vegas while they were at their low point — that wound up winning him a cool $100,000.
Virginia (-123) cuts down the nets at the Final Four
UVA came through on the moneyline in a wild National Championship game, but they were covering spreads at an insane rate all season if you were a backer. The Cavaliers went 26-12 ATS, an extremely profitable 68.4% rate. Virginia lost some key cogs to the NBA over the summer, so we’ll need to be a bit more patient next season before jumping in with two feet on betting them ATS again. But it was a magical ride for the Cavs, who easily could’ve lost to Purdue and Auburn (the second most profitable CBB team) in classic tournament games.
